So all you clever chaps out there, does anybody know if it is / could be possible to set up a USB or IP webcam as a device in NPVR so that i could add it as a channel? It seems feasible but there again, I'm no expert.....

Certainly, with GBPVR there was a webcam plugin that was quite entertaining at times. Sadly, it didn't support live streams.
I did at one time, in the old days, use a composite video camera going into a PVR150 to keep an eye on the bird table.

Shouldn't a webcam look like any digital capture device to npvr? Just without the tuning information, that is.

Yes, most USB webcams appear as analog capture devices, with normal crossbar and capture directshow filters, and might be able to setup for use like any other analog device.

The NetworkRecorder plugin enables recording any device that can be captured by a DirectShow graph or via http that output mpeg-ts stream. Since many stream are in other formats typically Windows Media of some form, you might be able to proxy http via VLC using NetworkRecorder or even proxy IPTV via VLC to NextPVR directly.

Did you get this working? I streamed the my Lifecam VX3000 using VLC and I can use Windows Media Player and VLC as clients to view the stream. However, Network Recorder gives me a black screen.

I launch Firefox as a custom task fullscreen with the address of our front porch ipwebcam. A key on our remote is programmed to kill it and return to the npvr menu.
