Is this a kind of mediaplayer that can run npvr's GUI? What about specs, does it look usable?

bgowland is working on a project with the "Touch Web Service" that could provide a NextPVR UI on many Android devices. In parallel I continue to look at extender options that offer functionality like the NMT's. Currently the Android media extenders that seem to be likely candidates are based on the Allwinner A10 with the Mali 400 GPU like the Mele 1000 and if they can get the h/w framebuffer control working in Linux, I will get one.

having a bit of a problem with mpeg2 interlaced video, but plays everything else flawlessly..[tho i haven't upgraded to 4.0 yet, which may fix that]

those 'player' boxes seem a bit expensive considering i can get a full tablet with almost every connection on those for same price, with a touchscreen and battery included..

i predict many more of these to make their way into the wild soon, just so cheap to make and very efficient performance...halfway between a full client and an extender..

I think an Android client app would be fantastic for thin clients, but in saying that I can't programme anything beyond simple C so I'll leave it up to the experts!

I already use the VLC stream function (i.e. http://<npvr>:8866/live?channel=1) on phones and tablets. It's nice to impress people when they come over that one media centre can serve a half dozen screens!

Just to clarify (with a disclaimer).

The work I did on the Touch Web Service was during a pre-release test phase of NextPVR when sub origianlly added the capability. My main goal was to rationalise some of the HTML, Javascript and jQuery needed to 'power' the web client and also to provide a basic hybrid Android/Web app (nTouch mentioned on that wiki page).

It's not a work-in-progress, however, but if anyone wants to pick it up and run with it, I'm happy to help out with advice and pointers as well as the nTouch source code (which I'm happy to release as public domain / licence free).

In answer to the question from Reddwarf - I couldn't say for definite but I suspect the Touch Web Service could be made to work on that device although I expect fine tuning of the various script files might be necessary. Also, bear in mind this aspect of npvr was always considered experimental by sub and my opinion is that there needs to be some more work done in the core npvr components to improve performance etc. Whether sub wants to continue with development is not for me to say and there have been no changes since the original experimental version in v2.3.6.

That's a limitation of most chips, they don't have h/w deinterlacing or the power for software 1080i deinterlacing

Not really much more expensiv, from China they are in the $75-100 range they have the remote, and wired Ethernet, plus more a/v output options. Pivos and Patriot make readily available Android extenders in the $100 range. A full-featured extender the Nixeus Fusion is ~150 and even GoogleTV players at $200 aren't outrageous. Trouble is what you expect as a good playback experience on a tablet/phone doesn't translate to the extender where expectations to play everything perfectly exist.

looks like some have deinterlacing working on that chip..[Feiyu mod] along with bluetooth usb dongles etc..

maybe because these are all developed in non-ntsc countries where interlacing isn't as prevalent..

i had a feeling they just hadn't taken advantage of the deinterlacing in the chip...
but you're right, not many android devices have deinterlacing-capable hardware...just nvidia,a10,omap and freescale have hw deinterlace from what i gather so far..

I have one on order - I plan to use mine on my main TV in the lounge - hooked up to Brian's ndroid app for setting up and playback of recordings. If Brian could provide a now/next facility in Ndroid it would be the perfect combo for me.

Yes there is a lot of buzz on that A10 device. For my playback needs I don't trust wifi only and the lack of HDMI protection on the MK802 has raised some eyebrows http://lists.phcomp.co.uk/pipermail/arm-...04040.html

i have cancelled my order for the mk802 and gone for the oval elephant device which fixes those issues.
