I now suspect antennae cable damaged or else card failure
I also think the prevent duplicate recordings may have been a little too strong in stopping the daily recordings when I was definitely getting a signal...

order of play -
1 - establish/fix signal by using tv/freeview box
2 - check if this resolves DVB card not working and fix/replace if necessary
3 - check if this now series records/single item records
4 - compare series recordings with/without duplicate prevention function

just so you're clear, the prevent duplicates logic would only prevent recordings from being scheduled in the first place, it couldn't interfere with any recording that actually does get scheduled. Further, it's my understanding that the prevent duplicates logic doesn't work for most UK users anyway, as the needed episode ID data is not available.

in other words, don't worry about that part, it's not your issue.

Sorry to be away - had several things to do and then turn attention back to NPVR:

I had a result!
Series of tests:
1 - disconnected antennae cable and attached it to Freeview/DVD/HDD/VHS Wink device to confirm signal was OK - easily confirmed. Reconnect cable to PC card - could still be a broken connection issue that temporarily fixed with the shifting of the cable...
2 - Check drivers again and see if there wasd an update available - no problem found
3 - Take a look at card to make sure it was installed properly (not sure how it could have 'uninstalled' from its slot, but anyway... - OK
3a - OH HANG ON - there is a little dust devil sitting on top of the card - not much bigger than a regular sized fly, but anyway - quick blow, and a flick then a blow - all gone...
4 - prepare for possibility that card may be duff aand start looking up possible replacements, plus some extra functionality - no harm in upgrading Big Grin
5 - perform recheck of card on Microsoft Media Centre - rule out NPVR only issue - HALT: Tuner working in Media Centre...
6 - Go back to NPVR - could be the cable was a problem, or else the dust devil may have shorted the card? Chennels now tuning in and playing.
7 - Run test record on the spot - OK
8 - Set a timer recording for later on.
8 - Notice EPG not updating well - so run EPG update from settings - have to go away.
9 - Came back - EPG update had halted on screen without completing, and recording hadnt taken place.
10 - OK - EPG stopping may have iunterfered with recording test - colear screen and try again
11 - First timed recording for series record went OK
12 - Second timed recording for another series record went OK
13 - Next timer in series for both recordings went OK.

Conclusion:
Either the cable is now tentatively OK, but wasn't (do not think this was the problem), or else the dust devil may have caused the card to fail - I think this may have been the problem.

In the meantime I have noticed 1 or 2 other glitches:
EPG update from settings halted onscreen without progressing.
Setting groups was possible, but when I go into EPG and choose a group to look at what I get was a blank list, until IO gop bvack to 'All Channels' and then I get my EPG back again.
This is a bit of a problem, as the order of the channels as found by NPVR isnt the regular order of the channels as usually shown by default in for example sky or virgin, radio times etc, but really what that means is I don't know how to re-order the channels into the order that I want without creating groups, and the groups I created don't display...

May I suggest that you look at the TV Listings plugin. It's most relevant function is that it allows you to create multiple guide lineups with different (or the same) channels in each lineup. Pressing the blue (as I recall) button on the remote changes from one list of channels to another. You can have the channels in any order in each list.

you can change the logical channel numbers in Settings->Channels. Assign whatever channel numbers make sense for you.

You should see this in Settings with additional entries for TV Listing and for TV Recordings with ticks against each ...
