Issue with 2nd HVR 950q USB stick

I've been using a Hauppauge 950q for a year or two with no issue. Got a second 950q. The original 950q no longer works, but the new one does. When I try to scan channels on the original, it shows 'Device failed to start'. XP device manager shows both USB sticks. I didn't change any connections to the original 950q.

Is there a install sequence I missed?

The way I read your logs, NPVR seems to think there are two instances of HVR-950 #1, and a single instance of HVR-950 #2. The telltale sign is that though you have just the two HVR-950's, NRecord is creating 3 NDigitalHost instances for capture source numbers 20, 22, and 27.

See if you have any tuners marked Enabled, but not "Present" and delete them.

If that doesn't work, the somewhat drastic solution would be to unplug both tuners, then go into Settings->Devices and delete all the tuners. Then exit NPVR, plug the tuners back in, and then go back into NPVR->Settings->Devices and setup your tuners again. You'd have to re-scan and map channels again of course.

There are no tuners marked Enabled, but not "Present"

As my signature shows, I have a Hauppauge 1600 and a 950q connected. I haven't updated it yet with the new second 950q.
The old (and working--mis-stated in the original post) 950q is the HVR-950 #2. The new 950q is HVR-950 #1.

Before I remove everything from Settings->Devices, I plan on trying to install the new 950q on a different computer to see if it installs correctly by itself. I have a slight suspicion there may be an issue with the new 950q hardware.

sorry, I could have sworn that all I saw was two 950q's, no 1600. But now when I look again, it's quite obvious that capture source 20 is the HVR-1600. I must have been reading too quick.

You should also make sure you've got the latest drivers for your 950q's - it's always possible there's some driver issue preventing two from working at the same time.

You of course have tried running the Hauppauge driver setup utility (HcwDriverInstall.exe)? And clicked all the warnings as it updates/reinstalls the drivers for all the Hauppauge hardware (2 warnings per device IIRC). And got a successful message at the end. And then in NextPVR copied the channel mappings from your other tuners.

I seem to recall my first dual 950Q attempt failed for unknown reasons when I didn't understand what the copy mappings prompt in NextPVR during the new tuner setup meant and I clicked no and then tried to scan and something froze or blew up.. and I ended up restoring the Ghost image from when one 950Q was working properly, did the drivers install dance again, and then clicked yes for the copy mappings prompt and all was good. Try not to drink too much beer as you do all this (that may have been my problem.....).

You've probably noticed the 950Q tuners run hot. In my setup, so hot that they often shutdown after a few hours of continuous recording, requiring unplugging/replugging to get them going again. So.. I have a 92mm fan stuck to my table appropriately so that air blows over the tuners. That thin gray super sticky double sided foam tape 3M makes is awesome.. it's the duct tape of the modern era..

Because you are running XP, and after you get all 3 tuners working, please do the 3 tuner test I posted about in this thread:

I was able to install the 950q on another box, so I tried again on this one. When I ran the driver setup utility, I didn't get the warnings. I clicked yes to copy channel mappings. Now when I try to start recording with the new 950q, I get a java exception error. The text of the error is included with the attached logs.

Looks like it is working now.

Besides the java exception errors, I also noticed Device Status box was completely blank. I took that as a sign something was very wrong. I restored my system back to before I bought the second 950q and started over.
I ran the Hauppauge win7 setup program after re-detecting the new 950q. After updating drivers and deleting an old winTV version, I rebooted. The 950q was re-detected, the driver updating utility stopped responding, I rebooted, the driver update utility worked this time. Win TV7 only shows one 950q, but NPVR shows both (as well as the 1600). I scheduled three programs to record, and it seemed to function properly.
I will try the 3 tuner test this weekend.
One thing I noticed - the Hauppauge support page for the 950q has two downloads that include drivers: WinTV v7 installation package, version 2.6 (wintv and drivers) and WinTV-HVR driver update: evx_153.113.343.zip (just drivers). The drivers in the WinTV download are much newer.

Excellent that you got it working and thank you for noting that the WinTV7 package has a newer driver version!

I took a look on some of my setups and did some searching and.... Hauppauge's web site is a bit screwy:

Note in my current setups, I don't have WinTV installed. Having learned what a POS it is during my early experiments, I went straight for the standalone driver installer when I reinstalled the OSes. And missed that the WinTV package also has newer drivers. It would be reasonable to assume that if a manufacture's website has a link to a standalong driver installer alongside the full package, that the driver versions would match... but nooooooo.....

So armed with Ghost drive images.. on my box "hdtv", I ran the wintv7_cd_2.6.exe which presented a menu with a driver installer and an application installer. I chose only the driver installer and updated the drivers, got the successful message and rebooted. I didn't install WinTV7, but will try that if my next 3 tuner test fails.

I have found with a USB Tuner that was running very hot and faulting, that moving it to a usb hub with separate power supply solved the overheating - some motherboards can't supply quite enough voltage on the usb bus for the tuner chip, so the current increases = more heat :confused: maybe! Well it worked for me anyway
