I mainly use my NextPVR system to watch live news programming and oftentimes I'll see a story I want to record. I know it's possible to use the ctrl-k command to instantly start a recording, but I've noticed that the recording will continue to run until the end of the program. It would be really great if the ability to start and stop recordings on demand could be included in a future update.

You can cancel the recording anytime you like either in pending recordings ,what's new ,recordings or from the tv guide what more do you want
If you cancel the recording it stops and the recording is saved up to that point

I think what the OP is asking for is to be able to record an arbitrarily long show. If I set up an OnDemand channel in NextPVR which by nature will with no EPG data, Ctrl-K will only record the chuck until the next hour mark. I would like it to work like GB-PVR (I keep going back there because it did LiveTV so well) and I could specify how long to record by entering minutes or by moving increments of time

mvallevand is correct, arbitrarily long recordings are what I'm looking for. Most channels I watch have no EPG data and I use NextPVR without a guide or remote (only keyboard/mouse). I could cancel the recording from the "what's new" sub-menu (thanks for the suggestion it does accomplish what I want) I just find it inconvenient to have to exit the live broadcast, return to the main menu, stop the recording, and return to live TV.

Try the [home] key. It lets you return to the menus without exiting Live TV.
