I recently changed MB on a laptop wreck (Acer Aspire) and it boots ok but then shuts down shortly after. I can hear the cpu fan speeding up shortly after turning it on and it seems very hot to me. The cooler is mounted on the cpu and chipset using heat conductive silicon paste so it should have good thermal contact and the cooler ribs are not clogged. Could it be that the cooler itself is broken? Laptop coolers are two phase, right? And if the freon or whatever it contains has leaked out it would not be half as efficient, right?

What do you guys think?

Did you ever get this figured out? I've never seen a cooler with freon in all my years of IT work, so that's probably not it. I had a known problem with some HP laptops over heating. They tie the GPU to the CPU via a heat pipe and it gets very hot. And even with the system cleaned out there was nothing I could do to cool it or make it stay running after over heating.
Google the model number of you laptop and OVERHEATING and see if there is something you can do.

Thanks fir the reply, no I haven't got this sorted yet. If there is no freon or liquid in the pipes of the coole, I starting to suspect the cpu itself. I have a spare, slightly slower cpu that I could try. Maybe the old cpu itself is the cause of overheat?

Laptops have their own line of CPU's since they run on reduced power and system needs. If you happen to have one, it might be worth a try, but it's a lot of work to get to generally.

Maybe as a test, take the laptop outside and run it in the cold weather (or a fridge/freezer) to see if heat is truly the problem. It could be something else too like bad memory. Try swapping this if you have some available.

It is a bit troublesome, but after disassembling/assembling the laptop 4-5 times I'm getting pretty well trained, just haven't found the time yet. Wink

FYI: Further investigation revealed that some of the resistors did not have any thermal contact with the cooler at all, I had to add a little piece of 0.5 mm copper plate on top of for them to reach the cooler at all. And ordinary silicon paste (for electronic components) is not good for the purpose either, you need some thicker paste that is not squeezed away so easily.
