Hey All,

Just started my newest NextPVR install and ran across something I haven't seen before. This is my first NextPVR install on Windows 7 (completed two others on Windows XP during the past year, and never saw this issue). I installed all of pre-requisites, including DirectX runtime, but when I go to the Settings screen, the first thing I see is the message: WARNING: The DirectX runtime is not available on this machine. Software rending instead. I have run dxdiag and it shows that I have DirectX 11 installed. I have even run directx_Jun2010_redist.exe from the link on the getting started page and still get the message. Anyone have any clues as to why I can't get DirectX to be recognized by the most current 2.5.9 install?

Thanks,

- Patrick

What video card do you have installed? Some old videocards aren't up to the requirements and can give this message.

You can also get this message if you've Remote Desktop'ed into the machine. In that case it can be ignored. It just happens because DirectX isn't available in that situation.

The video card is a GEForce 520, very modern specs. I didn't realize that the DirectX message could be tied to the Video card. Is it possible that it's because I haven't installed the newest drivers for the Video card? I forgot I haven't done that yet. I'll give that a try and see if it has any effect.

Thanks Sub! It was because I had not installed the Video drivers yet for my new PVR build. That fixed it.

I've been seeing the same message in Settings/About since installing NPVR about a month ago. I concluded it's just a minor glitch and have been ignoring it. Like patrickaburrows, I have DirectX 11 installed and an NVIDIA GEForce video card (8500 GT in my case). My NVIDIA driver is only 6 months old and Windows Vista tells me that no newer driver is available. I am able to watch HD channels just fine.

I have found that the message will go away after a few seconds if I click "OK" in any Settings window. But if I close Settings by clicking the red "X" or "Cancel," then the message will still be there the next time I open Settings. The message always returns when NPVR is reopened. I'm not losing any sleep over this myself.

Downlod the driver from the nvidia site or who ever made your card dont leave it upto windows update its crap for video stuff as it may not install all the extra crap needed
Also make sure you install this stuff http://www.nextpvr.com/nwiki/pmwiki.php?...requisites (even if you think you have the newer version install them all)

NVIDIA did have a new driver, even more recent than my NPVR installation; but installing it did NOT eliminate the warning message under Settings/About.

Gee, you think I should install DirectX 9.0c runtimes even though I'm currently running DirectX 11? Major Problem: The download link given on the wiki page provided above includes the following note under the heading Additional Information:

•Note that the DirectX Runtime (Direct3D, DirectInput, DirectSound) is not part of this package as it is included as part of the Windows operating system, and therefore cannot be installed or uninstalled.
Updating the DirectX Runtime is achieved by installing the latest Service Pack or obtaining a newer version of Windows.

I'm running Vista SP2. If this was a real problem, what would its effects be? Meanwhile, I've found another effective way of making the warning message go away:

Go to TV Guide, watch a little TV, return to Main Menu, wait several seconds, go to Settings. No more warning message!

You still need to install it, if you want DirectX. It is the End-User Runtime that sub (maybe SlimDX? too) needs not DirectX itself.

Some users have reported better success by installing the full directx end user download package: http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/...px?id=8109

Making the warning message go away by whatever sequence you've found doesn't change anything. If you look in your NPVR.log after starting NextPVR.exe you'll see the error message indicating that NextPVR has switched to software rendering the UI which will make it slower and use more CPU, and this will not change while it's running. NextPVR is not lying to you, or just not detecting something properly. It makes a DirectX api call, and the call either suceeds or fails... that's it.

It seems there have been a few users that for whatever reason have never been able to make DirectX work, no idea why, and they've just lived with it.

I will take your advice, but first I need more advice: Where should I put the extracted files? The download doesn't suggest a default location. Obviously it needs to be somewhere that NPVR can readily find it. Any other advice regarding specific steps would be appreciated. (Stop recording service? Restart computer? Change any Settings?)
