I'm new to NextPVR. I'm a long time SageTV user considering switching to NextPVR. And I'm hoping someone can help answer this question. I have been searching Google and this forum, and I think I know the answer but would like confirmation.

I set almost all my scheduled recordings on SageTV to be new, reoccurring, and for any channels, and SageTV decides which channel at which time to record my fav shows.

I seem to be missing something with NextPVR in this regard. I see only one option in Record that comes close "Record Season (NEW Episodes on this channel)". Is there a way to set up recordings for something like "Record Season (NEW Episodes on ALL channels)"?

The advantage I see in this option is to avoid conflicts since the same show is often on numerous channels, at least in my lineup/area. And then I can get as many fav shows recorded in the least amount of time with the recorder deciding when to select a show. The other advantage I've seen is when a channel drops a show when it goes on hiatus and is still picked up at some later date on a different channel. That probably rarely happens, but it gives me a sense of security that I never have to worry about missing a new episode cause I using the wrong channel.

Thanks for the advice and helping with my new-user learning curve.

When you schedule the recording in the TV Guide, select the 'Recording Type: Record All Episodes, All Channels' option. This will automatically filter out duplicates. It'll only record one copy of each episode (based on the unique show identifier in the guide data).

"New" is different to what you're describing. It actually refers to 'first run' shows.

I obviously did a poor job of explaining myself. I was actually meaning "first run" when I typed reoccurring. Sorry for using the incorrect terminology. So is there a solution to recording only first run (new) episodes of a show on all channels? Or only on a selected channel?

No, there isn't a 'first run on all channels' option, but given that new episodes typically air on a single channel, this hasn't really been a problem. I don't think anybody has ever asked about this before, so can't be a big deal.

That said, you can probably use a manual recording with Advanced Rules query to get it to do exactly this.

yes, I can't really imagine wanting a "NEW episodes on ALL channels" recording type. Is there really any show where the first run of each episode doesn't happen on a specific single channel?

It's simple for me. Sunday night and Thursday night scheduling can be a nightmare because there are more shows to record than tuners. Some shows are on "first run" east and west feeds and sometimes on Canadian and US stations at different times. I have a much better chance of not having a conflict with all channels/all times with 2 or 4 opportunities to choose from.

In my area, and I'm guessing most everyones, you have a sd and an HD channel which both play the same show at the same time. I'm guessing NPVR handles that as being separate programs then?

For the uk the HD versions don't always match the SD version, however there is nothing stopping you merging the channels so NPVR handles it as one item, but you will loose control over when you get HD.

Being a current SageTV user, you don't have to worry about channels at all, unless you are watching live TV perhaps, but never for scheduling recordings. You select a show, select the recording option, "First Run/Any Channel", and never worry about what channel it is. It also auto selects HD channels (by default) for that show if the scheduler can manage it as it juggles the scheduling. HD channels are always the preferred auto scheduling selection with SageTV.

A couple of more reasons I like not having to select a particular channel for scheduling. My cable company (Shaw Cable in Canada) has moved channels on more than one occasion as it has added new channels. I never missed a show with being able to select "All Channels." If I were to switch my cable TV provider from Shaw to MTS, who use different channel numbers for the same networks, I'd have to update my scheduled recordings. Then again, I suppose I currently have no idea if NextPVR uses channel numbers or call letters to select a channel, so maybe that is resolved with the EPG file.

Someone replied to this thread and said no one would ever want this feature. Well I asked about it, and while researching this forum before posting, I did find one or two other people that asked for this, their comments were embedded in other threads. So there are at least a few of us. And I personally believe all SageTV users (like myself that will some day have to jump ship) that are used to scheduling first run shows.

I suppose I've been spoiled with SageTV where for several years now I've never had to think or worry about channel numbers, which ones to select, is it HD or SD. Currently for me, this is all automatic. I used BeyondTV before using SageTV, where the scheduling features were very limited, and I had to carefully select what I wanted to watch and when. It was a paradigm shift with the SageTV scheduler, where I simply select a show, not care what time, day, channel, network, or SD or HD version I needed to select. The scheduler looks after it all. I think it was very insightful of the SageTV people, and that sort of convenience is the future of watching media. And I believe the advanced scheduler in SageTV was one of the main reasons that Google bought them. These SageTV features are now in the Google set top box that the Google Fiber customers have in Kansas City, or so I've read.

A thank you for everyone that helped me with me question, it's much appreciated. Smile
