Bringing an iPad to NZ

A friend's son is yachting the South Pacific and summering in the Bay of Islands/Opua in NZ. The son has asked the father to bring him an iPad. What are the considerations as far as customs, duties, etc? Would it be expensive if the intent was to leave the device there, but ultimately return to the US with it?

If the father is coming to NZ rather than posting it, then I'd just take it out of the packaging so that it looks like a personal belonging and not declare it. They'd never know.

Thanks, sub. Forgot to mention that the father would be bringing it on a visit. That is what he was planning to do.
