Issues with streaming on NEWA and X-NEWA. Are they related?

Hi All

Below I have tried to describe in as much detail what I am trying to do and the issues I have come up against. I have not posted logs yet as I am not sure which ones you would need and what action I should capture in the logs. I should also point out that I have been dabbling with this set up for a few days and I seem to be two steps forward, one step back. I do feel though that this still has merit if I can iron out the kinks. Thanks in advance...


The Solution Requirement

• A whole home DVR system with remote client machines
  
• Ability to rip DVDs into media gallery for viewing on remote client machines around the house
  
• Ability to view DVDs directly on remote client machines around the house

The Problem(s)
First let me say what is working;

• Can view live Comcast digital channels I receive in the following applications;

  • HD Homerun Quick TV on the server and any client machine I have installed the HD Homerun apps on
    
  • XBMC on the server via;

    • NextPVR add-on
      
    • X-NEWA add-on

  • XBMC on the remote client machines via;
    [INDENT]
    • NextPVR add-on
      [/INDENT]

• Can view recorded Comcast digital channels I receive in the following applications;

  • XBMC on the server via;
    [INDENT]
    • NextPVR add-on
      
    • X-NEWA add-on although if there are no recordings I get an error stating ‘Unable to contact NPVR Server!”

• Can NOT view live Comcast digital channels I receive in the following applications;

  • XBMC on the remote client machines via;

    • X-NEWA add-on. I get a second of video and then it stops/freezes or kicks me back to the EPG
      
    • NEWA web page. Clicking on ‘View Live’ on the channel number launches VLC in a webpage window but no audio or video is played. The status in VLC at the bottom says “Idling”

• Can NOT view recorded Comcast digital channels I receive in the following applications;

  • NEWA web page. Clicking on ‘Manage Recordings’ and then selecting ‘Play’ launches Windows Media Player (not sure why). No audio or video is played.

What I haven’t tried yet;

• I can get iNEWA on my iPhone and initiate recordings but I have not attempted to see if I can stream to a mobile device.

Streaming via NEWA and X-NEWA are quite different so problems are likely not related. For remote streaming X-NEWA just passes a url or a filename to xbmc's player. I can't think of a reason why it would act that that much differently but I might see something if you upload the client xbmc.log.

The error on no recordings I'll take away as a probable problem.

It's not appearing to to get any data. Since you are connecting on port 8866 to start streaming it is not firewall are you sure the tuner is available?

I ran one more test, switching off the Firewall on the DVR Server (WHS2011). The user experience was the same and the log files have been uploaded here;

Just to confirm, I can view live tv via the NextPVR Add-on but not via the X-NEWA Add-on.

I have also attached the web.log file just in case this helps. Sorry if this is a scattergun. I am not sure what to look for. I did notice an error in the web.log file though

Yes I don't think it is firewall (although the second post did show a little video data) and x-newa in Direct mode and the pvr.nextpvr use similar streaming. I can't see why this would work on the server and not client. This could just be an xbmc weakness. The only althernative I might suggest is turn on X-NEWA Timeshifting streaming but you need to share the
LiveTV folder for this to work.

Hi Martin

An update. I have installed OpenElec on one of the laptops I have (HP 6710b) just to see if that helps anything. When I try to view a live tv stream using either native or timeshift I notice that the HD Homerun status window initially shows that a ts file is being saved in the Live TV buffer (D:\ServerFolders\Recorded TV\) and after a second it disappears from the status window. This also seems to relate to the fact that the video does run for a second before crashing back to the EPG window.

I had a quick look at the web.log file on the server and the time it happened is 19.54.26. Attached is the file. Is this helping track the problem down?
