Regsvr32 woes

Hi everyone. Since this is my first post, I'll start by saying thank you to sub and all his supporters here whose hard work has made such a great DVR experience possible. I can't imagine going back to regular TV!

With that done, here's the problem:

NPVR is not loading any video decoder for either live tv or recording playback. I am using FFDShow, but others I've tried don't work either. I get sound, but no video.

I believe the problem is that I cannot re-register codecs using the provided tool. Running normally causes regsvr32 to return a permissions error, and as Admin returns a message that the module cannot be found.

The problem began when I installed a program called Doubletwist, which looks like it added a bunch of new VC_RED versions.

Here's what I've tried so far:
-removed all VC_RED versions, including the one specified in the prereqs in the wiki.
-uninstalled NPVR
-uninstalled FFDShow
-reinstalled VC_RED from wiki
-reinstalled FFDShow
-reinstalled NPVR

Needless to say, this didn't solve the problem. I still can't register codecs. I'm kind of stuck here, guys. Any help would be great!

Sub's new MS DTV-DVD patch from last week, which I just now found, is working great! Although it is the only one that works. I did some deep searching on this one, so I might be the only person to have this problem. It would be cool to solve it, but maybe your powerful brains would be better used elsewhere.

I removed most of the TVListings messages from the log because I have a lot of channels and they made it much harder to read.

If you're trying to run regsvr32 on Vista/Win7/Win8, you'll need to do it from a command prompt you started with 'run as administrator'.

What codec are you trying to use ffdshow for? From memory, this decoder is not usable for H.264 video. You should be able to use it for MPEG2, as long as you've enabled MPEG2 support in the ffdshow settings. You may also need to add nextpvr.exe to the application white list in the ffdshow settings.

Either I misunderstood the full capabilities of that patch or they now have H.264 channels in parts of the U.S.

I am right-clicking the re-register filters icon and selecting "Run as Administrator". I assume that's correct because I don't get a permissions error, but rather a message saying that the module cannot be found.

I was using FFDShow for H.264 just fine before this problem, although it would quickly bog down if I started doing post-processing type stuff (blur, NR, sharpness, or what-have-you). You might be thinking of their DXVA-enabled decoder, which didn't work for me.

To be clear, I don't think this is an NPVR issue as such, but rather an issue with regsvr32, maybe tied to VC redist version. I'm out of my depth there, and was more looking for a way to get codecs to register systemwide. This is the only reference I could find via Googling:

Some people in the US have H.264 because they're using an encoder device like the HDPVR or Colossus.

The OP is using an HDPVR which does h/w h264 encoding on-the-fly. That being said some US cablecos are using h264 (they call it mpeg4) in the 860-1000Mhz spectrum so CableCard users might be seeing it.
