Good little write up about it here: http://www.theregister.co.uk/2013/05/30/...264_codec/

Thanks and how important it is. What is surprising is that new h264 formats like 10bit and 4k aren't being supported in h/w yet. Video card manufactures always want you to upgrade.

h.264 has been added to the ATSC standard, but I wonder if it will ever be used... no existing TV could decode it so no broadcaster will use it until most TV's support it, but if it's not being used then why should any TV manufacturer bother supporting it on new TV's?

As a side note to that, there is a draft standard up for review at Cablelabs that adds DTS-HD as an audio codec for cable systems.

I spotted it earlier and found the linked article to be a good read for someone at my meagre level. Amazing what can be done nowadays.

Most of the TVs flogged over here must support h.264 so it's probably not a big deal to add it in. And even if the US broadcasts don't support it, aren't there smart(ish) TVs that can play back stuff like mkvs off a usb stick? Chances are they can do it too.
