TV Tuner NOT Detected

This is SO frustrating (I have a laser engineering degree, but am a novice wrt all this, and of course...MORE - so please walk me thru.

I bought a DIAMOND TV Tuner (TVW750USB) to watch cable TV on my COMPAQ Presario CQ57 laptop. I used the provided CD to properly install driver(s) and "ArcSoft TotalMedia 3.5" after Windows Media Center failed to detect tuner. Yes, it is listed under devices and "device is working properly".

Prior to this I checked and updated to get latest ".NET Framnework"...gasp! After re-boot and re-install, etc. I downloaded the recommended "NEXT PVR" that might better detect the device - - to NO avail, so????

No - I don't have another computer to try this on and I bought this online, so I might have to box and return?

PS For all I know, I may have to connect the coaxial from the cable box to the tuner for detection of device?

What type of TV are you trying to receive? ATSC, QAM or analog?

Can you visit the Settings->Devices screen, then post the npvr.log file so we can see what it detects.

Yeah, I read a bit on the different types of TV around the world and the various acronyms, but I'm gonna need a bit of help on this. The device I believe can be used for many types, but like I said - I'm going to use it with (USA) cable TV via Comcast. So...this is...?

As far npvr.log, you got me. All I said (like I described) was Setttings->Devices screen came up with a blank. Is there then a selection (please describe) that will provide this npvr.log???

If you only want to plug in the cable and not connect to an antenna or to a cable box, your choice is pretty much limited to clear QAM these days. Analog cable to these devices died in most of the US four years ago and clear QAM is being shut down too.

I still get Analog channels here, on Time Warner cable. That's beside the point however.

garevalo, as you are just Getting Started, it might be reasonable to read the Getting Started thread stickied right at the top of the support forum (the second post has the getting started help). Also linked in my signature where for some crazy reason I call it the "Tech Support Sticky". Among other things, it covers logs.

DId the device come with ArcSoft TotalMedia, and even it couldn't see the device?

Can you go to the Settings->Devices screen, then zip and attach the c:\users\public\npvr\logs\npvr.log file? This will tell us what tuners it can see.

Yes, some people hook their analog tuners to the analog out on the STB. For QAM no you feed cable directly in. For over the air ATSC you connect an antenna.

5 years ago yes, no not really.

@johnsonx42 we have analog too, but they have already announced it will die and distributed DTA devices and it is a matter of time before they want the bandwidth enough to deal with thousands of complaints.
