The big problem I'm seeing is the technology has been changing too fast for quite a number of years now & at the rate it's going we (NextPVR extender users in particular) are never going to have something to replace the aging NMT's as they die

Why do you dislike and discount the touch UI so much? It seems perfect for smart tv's and OTT boxes.

martin123 I'm old school but I'd only buy a tv on how good a tv it is, the smart features will be obsolete far before the tv and the tv will enough hdmi inputs to make up for it. Unless you want 4K waiting is more for price. I enjoy HD so much more than SD I am disappointed I waited as long as I did.

I don't like or dislike it at in any way as I don't really understand what it does & what NextPVR functions will (& won't) be available with it at all Wink

I can't see me getting a smart TV any time soon with the price the smart function seems to add to the price of the same TV without the smart
option & I have no idea what an OTT box is or what they cost.

It could be the next NMT.

An OTT (over-the-top) box vs STB basically is for playing video delivered to the home via the Internet but not by your cable or IPTV provider. They are most often cheap like roku and atv and even free with some subscription which is why the value in a smart tv is low. As for buying tvs without smartv typically here anyway that is an option just very low end tvs.

personally I recommend Samsung tvs. Nice picture, great features, been my favourite brand for years. I have
- Plex
- NextPVR
- Netflix
All running from my tv, no need for any other device. Sound is sent to my receiver using ARC so only 1 single HDMI cable to and from my receiver. Xbox and bluray player plugged into my receiver. I can send videos on my tablet to my tv via samsung all share thingy.

I was putting off getting a tv until google tv came to NZ, but that has meant putting it off for years. The difference between a 2012 and 2013 samsung tv is great speed. Im sure 2014 ones will be better, but 2013 has good performance, and can replace a HTPC easily and you'll be happy with it.

Aslong as you can write an app in standard code (eg html/js/css) you can reuse most of your code and port it to another system with ease. The problem with older samsung devices is they weren't using a standard browser, so html/js doesn't work as expected.

I'm wanting to get a google tv box and port my app to that (just not sure which one to get yet). Planning to keep the code in one project, and just use some logic to detect what device its running on, so I'm not having to maintain the code in lots of different projects.

The current (flaky) TV is HD and with the current terrestrial and satellite FTA HD programming is excellent - one of my better purchases.
So choice will have picture quality as number one on the requirements. Samsung currently seems to have the better list of 'catchup TV' channels on offer, but that can change in a moment of course.

I didn't want to make a panic decision when the current TV dies, so clarifying my mind in advance. Minimising the number of remotes was one silly reason for the smart tv option over dumb+box

I was disappointed that my first Samsung Smart TV buy (in 2011) provided BBC iPlayer, but none of the other channels' catch up offerings or Netflix (despite being advertised as 'coming soon'). I recently purchased a £100 Samsung F6500 BD player, which provides the 2013 Smart TV platform, and is controllable by the main TV remote via CEC (why I kept to the same mfr).

There's nothing wrong with the TV itself and PQ doesn't look much different to the latest models, so until 4K gets usable (i.e. readily available content) I will probably upgrade the BD player again if I need a new Smart TV platform. However, given that 90% of my viewing is NPVR/NMT driven, I doubt I'll be upgrading any time soon.
