pattykmn Wrote:I do understand command prompt (not quite sure how to do as admin, I am the only user on this new netbook if that matters?) and i understand "cd" means change directory, so in my case it would be "cd DOWNLOADS" (I think? because "DOWNLOADS" is the folder where I put things that I've personally added/downloaded)---- beyond that i didn't really understand the rest of your suggestion; I don't understand "cd /d %~dp0"
sorry, my comment about "cd /d %~dp0" was about what the batch file might be missing that would prevent it from working by simply double-clicking it in Windows, it wasn't anything for you to do.

to get an admin command prompt in windows 8 you move the mouse to the lower left corner of the screen like you're going to call start menu, but you right-click; that brings up a handy menu which among other useful things includes "Command Prompt (Admin)".

then once you have the command prompt, you use the cd command to get to wherever your wintv7 and softpvr.bat downloads are (it may indeed be just "cd downloads"). then just type SoftPVR and hit Enter. it should work...
Quote:I did use this device and the WINTV software on my old laptop, and I don't really recall using anything analog -- I'm not using the coax cable connection, I'm using Svideo and A/V cables for audio, but they go into an adapter (that came with the unit) that plugs into the unit via micro HDMI. So am I really using "analog"? On the old laptop with the WINTV it just let me select "S video" as the input.
yes, that's analog. NPVR only speaks digital transport stream internally, so analog tuners need extra software bits to convert the data before NPVR sees it.

Quote:I apologize for asking so many elementary questions; I just don't fully understand.
we're here to help. once you have it working show your appreciation by donating a few bucks to sub.

Quote:WINTV gave me an error saying I need their tech support's "permission" to use this on a netbook (no cd/dvd drive), which I think is crazy....
I think that's simply about proving you have a valid WinTV7 CD from a purchased HVR tuner package, which they normally do by simply asking you to insert your CD. No CD drive, no way to validate. WinTV7 is commercial software, and includes licensed 3rd-party components as well, so they can't let everyone on the internet just download and install it. The "Option 2" instructions you're following work around this limitation for those Hauppauge tuner owners who have this sort of problem.

I did the command prompt; this is what I got -- My nPVR still only shows the original two tuners that it has shown all along :-(

Should i go delete temp folders and try again?

Edit: I tried that but got the same result

Edit #2: Could this be affecting the issues -- When i go into settings on nPVR there is this message, in red: "Warning: The DirectX runtime is not available on this machine. Software rendering instead."

sorry, that's a bug in the script that was discovered a few weeks ago. I guess no one put the fixed version on the wiki. I'll find the fixed version for you in a bit....

Here's a corrected version of SoftPVR.bat. This one also puts it off the root of your system drive (usually C:\SoftPVR), as I think manually sticking stuff under Program Files\NPVR is a bad idea.

Hey we're getting somewhere! I used the zip you supplied, and I now have an analog tuner - yippee!
I set up a fixed channel 3 and an S Video channel.
The fixed channel 3 has spotty audio, the Svid has perfect audio -- but neither has video, just a black screen. I am a complete newbie when it comes to decoders, so I tried only a couple changes in the video category but they didn't work so i put everything back the way it was.

I do not have a channel blaster, I plan on just setting the Dish box with reminders to go to the channels I want, and setting nPVR manually to record from S video at the corresponding times

Edit: I closed and reopened nPVR and it is working!!!!! THANK YOU SOOOOO MUCH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If I haven't been too much of a pain and if you're willing to help just a little further.....

I have the system working from Dish receiver to netbook, no issues.
I have my own stand alone DVR - the original plan was just to use that, but the TV where I'm staying has no external input capability, so I'm trying to use my tuner and nPVR just to view recordings from my stand alone DVR (I'm thinnking with my DVR as the input, I can just watch through nPVR as Live TV).

I ran the Dish output to my DVR input using A/V cables. Then my DVR output to netbook (WINTV HVR 950Q) using Svid for video and the red and white A/V cables for sound. The coax is going out of my DVR to the TV.
Now I'm not getting sound on the netbook. ? It will randomly start working after it's been on 5-8 minutes without me changing anything.
Any idea what's going on?

(The reasons I don't want to just record directly into nPVR are: 1. I am living in a motel room with two dogs (new job/new town) and it's very small, I don't want the dogs getting caught up in cords when I'm not here. and 2. my stand alone DVR can playback in fast speed with sound, and FF through commercials as well. So they're not "absolute" necessities, just preferences) -- but I'm at a loss as to why the audio doesn't work consistently?

Thank you for all the time you've spent on me!

Edit: Sorry to waste your time -- I searched other threads, I installed AC3Filter, I didn't *do* anything with it, just installed it and set my settings to use it for AC3 and it's working :-)
Again, I REALLY appreciate all the help!!

interesting, analog uses MPEG-1 Layer II audio, not AC3, but as long as it's working.... enjoy!
