OK, maybe I'm misunderstanding some things... but I purchased an HDHR Plus to replace my ancient (original) HDHR because it had "H.264 support".

So, I dropped it in as a straight replacement, configured everything, and did a test recording... the file is definitely much smaller (< 1 GB for ~20 mins of video, would have been > 2 GB previously), but this is what mediaanalyzer tells me is in the ts file (see attachment).

**Edit - I was wrong about the file duration, it's 5 mins & change, not 20

I thought it'd be recording H.264/x264 natively (?).

Looks like, on WMC, this is configured at software level.

sub - does NPVR have similar support?

I don't have one of these devices, so don't know much about them. If you configure it to send H.264 to NextPVR, then NextPVR should handle it fine.

I'm pretty sure there is a couple of users that have successfully used the HDHR Plus to do H.264 with NextPVR in the past.

Found this:

Testing it out now. Seems this option does exist on the NPVR side!

OK. I finally got everything to work, but I had to reconfigure the HDHR Plus as an IPTV device - using URL's like this for the channels:

http://<hdhr ip>:5004/auto/v<chan nbr>?transcode=<profile>

And in the "type" dropdown I selected H.264 TS.

although I don't know how it would work with a dual HDHR to configure everything this way... but I did a 1-channel test and MediaInfo said the resulting ts file was indeed H.264/AVC.

I've cross posted over there as well as opening a support ticket with them... hopefully we can get this worked out.

In the meantime, if there's anyone else that actually has this working, I'd appreciate some help. This is the whole reason I bought the HDHR Plus.

Did you go the the HDHDR's built in web server to turn on transcoding?

I am running NextPVR with a HDTC-2US, and all I needed to do was:

a) add the new tuners to the devices basically following the instructions here: http://my.hdhomerun.com/instructions/sof...xtpvr.html
b) set the default transcode profile to "HEAVY"

After that my file sizes dropped from around 7GB to about 2.8GB. File sizes are still 1920x1080, but the bit rate drop from around 16,108kbps to 6,429.

There is no noticeable change in video quality, but i have noticed that my comskip jump points are off (cutting early) by 7-10 seconds. This only happens on the H.264 files. Files recorded as MPEG2 on my other tuners don't have this issue.

That could be a 7 second transcoding delay on the box vs PC clock time. If you know how to extract Timing.Info It would be interesting seeing it.
