I just set up a client PC, using NPVR as the client software, and wondered why none of my recordings played. I have postprocessing set up to trancode into avi and rename/adjust the entry in npvr.db3.

On the server these recordings play just fine, but on the client I noticed that when I select such a file there is a short pause and
then NPVR returns to the screen where I selected to play the recording.

Live TV and not transcoded recordings (.ts) play just fine.

Is it expected that avi files do not play on clients through the recordings screen, but play on the server recordings screen?

Martin, I remember, you told me so. OK, but is it a bug or a feature? I mean it works great on the server, but it fails on the client! Also, if this fails by design it would be nice if NPVR would tell the unsuspecting user that this is not supported.

Client server support is only intended to work with the type of files that NextPVR creates. ie, .ts files.

Basically there is no auto-magic way for client/server that would work for all file types. It needs specific implementation for each type of file, and I didn't want to commit the huge amount of time that'd be required for other file formats (creating custom splitter directshow filters etc).

NextPVR purposefully doesn't provide any built-in transcode functionality, because I'd rather people stick with .ts files, so I don't have to worry about these types of complications.

You can still watch avi files from a client, but you have to do it via the Video Library.

You're right that it should show a message saying something like "this file type is not compatible with client mode". I'll try to add this for the next release.

You might be able to use XBMC as a client for avi file recordings too.

Sub, thanks. Maybe it's just time for a bigger harddrive. Martin, I'll give XBMC a try.

I convert all my recordings to mp4 at night so I cannot play them back on the client. Plus, the client can't play live tv. It locks up every 5 - 10 minutes. If I record the show and play it back basically in real time it doesn't crash. I have the unlocked SAF decoders and have tried every combination on the decoders page with no luck.

This weekend I installed xbmc and it plays live tv for hours without a hitch. Important tip, however. You have to turn on deinterlacing. But just try to find it. You can look in every screen on the settings tab and not find it. You have to click on the movie reel icon during playback to find dozens of other settings. Deinterlacing is found there.

And it plays recorded shows that are mp4s just fine.

Another tip is make sure once deinterlacing is set is save as default at bottom of the video settings.
Also set sub titles to off by default in the audio section and save as default there also.
in main setting under playback change to expert and select sync refresh to match video.
install x-newa and in config on general tab select autostart web client, and boom it looks just like next pvr server ( only thing that doesnt work is comskip in recordings menu but if you use videos from a shared drive it will auto skip)

If you follow these instructions comskip will work from the recordings menu, I use it all the time http://forums.nextpvr.com/showthread.php...post481613
