I have one of these on the way: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.as...-_-Product

Question: I'm pretty unfamiliar with what IR remotes might be compatible... I've only ever used Snapstream Firefly remotes, which have a discrete USB receiver and some software to install/configure.

What would be the best plan/method for using a remote on this one? Would my TV remote work or do I need to find something else? I'm planning to (at least try) use KodiBuntu, so a Linux-friendly solution might work best.

I like the MCE remotes from ebay. I have a couple of these:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Microsoft-MCE-Re...33808f0466

If you go this route, and don't get this one, make sure you get one with the larger receiver. The cheap, tiny receiver ones are not "real" MCE remotes and do not use the ehome driver, thus have more limited capabilities. They look like a keyboard to Windows.

The wiki has info on how to tweak it to better work with NPVR, assign F7 or green button to start NPVR. I have no experience with it on Linux, but I think XBMC supported the MCE remote.

If your TV remote can be configured as an MCE remote, then you can use that. My cheapo Sanyo TV remote can be set as MCE and works fine. I use a Logitech Harmony and that works as well, but a bit fussy to get it just how I wanted it for NPVR.

There's a new gadget that has been mentioned recently that looks pretty good, FLIRC. Would be worth looking into.

I think johnsonx42 was thinking about trying it.

So, I guess I thought the IR receiver integrated with the NUC could work with a remote - so that I didn't have to use a separate dongle - is this not the case?

Because if I have to use a dongle, I might as well just port over my Firefly remote...

check the reviews on that link, "*Built in IR reader (compatible with Media Center Remotes)"
it's basically a media center dongle built-in... You may be able to use IR Server Suite or other remote software to be able to use any remote with it..Smile
but a MCE remote will work out of the box..Big Grin

IF the built-in IR for the NUC can indeed work with the MCE remote, THEN any remote that can be programmed for the MCE remote codes (on the AUX button, for example) SHOULD work. As I mentioned, the remote that came with my Sanyo TV had a code for the MCE remote that I assigned to the AUX (or whatever) button and it works with the MCE receiver I pointed to on ebay. On the other hand, I cannot get my cable STB remote to work even though it has a code for MCE remote.
