First time install of NPVR failed on win 8.1 Pro 64bit with media center I am looking for a DVR program to replace SageTV.

The NPVR program folder was not created in either the c:\program files (x86) folder or in c:\program files folders. However the folders and files were created in c:\users\public\npvr. When I try to re-run the installer it skips all the program files thinking that they are already installed. NPVR is not listed in the Control Panel Programs and Features to uninstall. I can see some Registry entries were made so it appears the installer thinks this is fully installed. Please advise how to repair this installation or remove it entirely and start over.

sounds like a UAC issue to me. uninstall NPVR from the control panel, then when you install NPVR again, right-click it and select Run as Administator.

I ran the install program again as the Administrator and it installed correctly. Thanks. I don't understand why Win 8.1 does not run programs as the administrator by default when there is only one user and it is the administrator.

Yeah, that's weird. I'm on Win 8.1, and I just ran the installer, and it prompted me to run as administrator like I'd expect.

Did you rename the installer? By default, any program that contains the word "Setup" (or a couple other similar words) should automatically trigger the Run as Administrator prompt.

I did not change the name of the installer. I downloaded the file, then ran it. Windows did not ask if I wanted to run as an administrator, but the choice is there if I right click the file.

That's User Account Control, it's not exactly new unless you've been clinging to Windows XP until now. It was introduced with Vista almost 10 years ago, and is generally a good thing. The original implementation in Vista was a bit heavy-handed, but it's been tuned to behave pretty well since then. You can turn it off (set it to "Never Notify"), but it's usually not recommended to do so.

To me the only issue with UAC is that users have no clue what it is, so whenever they get a UAC prompt they just click "OK" without knowing why thus partially defeating the protection... once one bad thing gets in past UAC, it can invite all it's friends in for a big malware party without ever needing to trigger another UAC prompt.

As to why UAC didn't prompt by default on your system, I don't know. I have seen it happen before, don't know what the solution might be.

I had UAC set to "never notify" so I moved it up one notch. Thanks for your help.
