.. or might the better question be "does Freeview NZ's DVB-S broadcast adhere to the ATSC standards?"

wodger Wrote:Thanks. It has a "wall plug power supply"??!So does that pctv stick mentioned earlier. It requires an external power supply, rather than being powered by the USB bus. DVB-S/S2 doesn't lend it self well to being in a USB stick, because it needs to meet significant power requirements of LNBs and motors that can be at the other end of the coax cable, and those can't be meet by USB supplied power.

Thanks for responding sub.
I gather ATSC only applies to DVB-T? I never saw this term years ago. I'm just annoyed that I never got Hauppauge DVB-S USB tuners while they were more common. I didn't anticipate them being hard to find years down the track.

Still available in UK / Europe though, which are the main market for these types of devices.

Hmm, ok thanks for the info. I'm keen to do it this way (satellite, USB etc), but I'll give it some more thought before I put money into it. The aerial guy went to my house while I was at work and told me "no signal" even though I had told him I'd got a signal and was using it. I just wanted him to do the hard work of rewiring the aerial cable internally - I had just draped mine over the roof, down the outside of the wall and in through the window. If I can get that working then I'll look at HDHomeRun or whatever.

I guess I'll just install my PCI tuner and put NPVR on the server in the meantime. I can only install one tuner because this computer only has one old school PCI slot.
I'll have to remove server 2012 and put windows 8 on it, as I seem to recall having big problems with the drivers on server 2012 r2. This means I now have 3 reasons in total to have windows 8 as the host, so I guess I should get around to it!

Correct. ATSC is what the americans use. DVB-S/T/C is what every body else uses - well Europe and us.

The Avermedia AVer3D Satellite TV is a USB DVB-S/S2 device that works with NextPVR. It was widely available in NZ, but is getting a bit more difficult to find these days. Only problem is that it does not support DiSEqC in NextPVR (only supported in the supplied app). But it is nice and fast when changing channels in NPVR.
If you are happy to order from overseas, I've always had good luck with the TBS gear. They do a number of USB interfaces. |
