Thanks to the posters on this forum, you guys are great!!

Question about which direction I should go with my system/network setup. Here is what my network consists of. WD mycloud NAS 3tb, gigabit linksys router, hdhr atsc dual tuner, custom built pc (amd 760K, gtx750ti, 3tb along, (2) 1tb and ssd, winodws 8.1 MSI motherboard, starting as something different and has morphed into what I have now). The custom built pc has the npvr software and dumping files to nas/internal 3tb. Custom pc is used for light to medium gaming duties along with dvr duties...

Here is what I would like to do: use the custom pc as npvr server for kodi on tv attached to custom pc as well as act as a server for the additional 2 tvs in the house that aren't already connected for DVR purposes (considering raspberri pi 2's.)

My dillema stems from my msi motherboard (biggest question here) The only way I can have NPVR wakeup and suspend the pc is by setting wake up events on my MB to OS. This works great however it doesn't let me use WOL or wake via USB (rc6 mce remote). (greyed out in the windows software) If I use Bios setting for wake up events, I can use wol and wake via usb but than NPVR is unable to wake the pc for recordings. If I switch to a different motherboard can I get both of these working perfectly to do both? Is it even possible? Or do I need another windows pc to handle recording duty only?

I would like to spend the least amount of money on this as possible as I would need another hdhr and the cost of 2 raspberri pi's to make it work perfectly.

Hi

I've got a circa 7 year old ASUS P5Q mobo and WOL, wake on mouse and npvr timers all work fine. I thought everybody's PC just worked the same way.

I suspect something is not quite right in your bios. have you tried disabling EUP2013 to see if this helps as this may well block WOL events (according to google).
what's the exact model number of the mobo?

Thanks gEd for the comments...

Motherboard is an MSI fm2-a75ma-e35. EUP 2013 is disabled...

So I called MSI yesterday and spoke to their technical help line for motherboards. Here is their response. "if you put a NIC on the motherboard it will override the motherboard settings and should work" This was after I explained what I wanted to do. I am a bit confused by this as, wouldn't the motherboard block the signal from NIC card, since I would have it set to OS and not BIOS wake up. The representative was really surprised it didn't work out of the box with windows 8.1. Now i am thinking bad MB and should get a new one.

he may be right in that a separate NIC can have its WOL configured from within windows rather than in the bios. there's cheap enough to have a go i suppose.

As a said, i have come across a mobo that didn't support WOL AND wake on USB AND wake on timer. perhaps it's a limitation of that board but I find that hard to believe.

I googled "msi wol greyed out" to have a look

http://www.edugeek.net/forums/windows/80...elp-3.html

In BIOS it needs;

1.Enter bios to set “LAN option ROM” enable.(Integrated Peripherals-> LAN option ROM)
2.Enter bios to set “Resume By PCI or PCI-E Device”enable.(Power management setup->Wake up Event Setup)
3.EUP 2013 DISABLED!!! (this was the key, if this is enabled it wont work for me)

don't have time to do any more digging, off on vacation for a week.....
