Can you post your samba configuration file? Usually it is called smb.conf.

Here is a link providing some information on samba configuration: https://www.samba.org/samba/docs/using_samba/ch06.html
Here is another post describing a situation similar to yours but on Ubuntu: http://askubuntu.com/questions/258284/se...7-and-xbmc

What exactly is your Linux device, is it a NAS or a Linux server? What distribution is it running? How did you initially setup samba on it?

You're going to have to provide some detailed information or it's going to be difficult to help... I believe the trick will be to setup anonymous login that has access to the shares you want NextPVR to access.

OK, using this link:

http://www.linuxjournal.com/content/rasp...r?page=0,1

I found I can edit the samba configuration with this command:

>> sudo nano -w /etc/samba/smb.conf

I've now got Samba configured with this: (sorry for a screenshot, but I don't know how to copy text out of Kitty or the DietPi to the PC)

The defaults should be fine. Did you see my other post to use the IP and not DIETPC as the name in NextPVR? You are going to going to need a static IP and the are potentially things on the Windows side that might need change too but I am not going to spend a lot of time on it since I go back to my other comment that the RPi is really not a good NAS solution for HD video. There are too many bottlenecks, you could easily be reading and writing simultaneously and the RPi uses the USB for the drive and the network. I am not sure why you don't just replace the failed local USB drive.

Hey Martin,

I did get the DIETPI setup with a Static IP on the router, but I left the DNS name in the path.

Do you still think it should be changed? I wouldn't think it would make a difference (which is why I didn't change it), but I could be wrong.

I had been wanting to replace the media PC's USB drive with a networked drive for a long time. The media PC goes to sleep or is buys doing other stuff when family is watching it, so I was thinking that would be a better solution. I may just keep the media on there (ripped and downloaded movies), but try to find another solution for local TV recordings. I have enough room on it now to record the news (30 minutes), but only because I went in and cleared the cache in both browsers (Chrome and IE - I don't even use IE, but it still had a almost 1 GB in cache) and emptied the Recycle Bin.

TV and Recording TV seems to both work using the local mSATA drive. It's just too small to keep things that way.

Yes I would change to the IP. It's not really a DNS name unless you add it to your hosts file, it is NETBIOS name that has a whole protocol associated to it.

Ok, I lost track of the initial specs (helps to go back and read the whole thread again). Your smb.conf settings look ok as far a I can tell, I agree with Martin, it could be that DietPI is not resolving (so in windows you'll need to reference via IP, not name), I can't tell from the logfile you posted as I don't see an attempt to access the DietPi device. You should also be able to look on your Pi at the samba log (/var/log/samba.log.xxxx where xxx=machine name of the client) to see if any attempts made it to the Pi.

A little googling shows a fair amount of discussion round using rPI as a NAS device. For straight file copies, people are claiming about 3-5Mbs, however with multiple activities going on at once (i.e. recording a video, and watching another), it's probably going to become unusable. As Martin recommended, you're probably going to need to either add another HD to your NextPVR server, or get a real NAS for your network for this to be really usable long term.

Right after buying the RPi, I saw the ODroid XU4 on Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B0163GEA64

It has 8 cores, gigabit LAN and USB 3 ports.

{Doh!}

Even when I specified "Allow Anyone" in the screenshot shown in Post 53, I went to browse the network drive using the IP address before entering it in NextPVR's settings:

\\192.168.2.99\dietpi

When I clicked "Enter", I still had to manually specify the DietPi login information.

Something still isn't right.

Hey,

How are you supposed to enter the recording directory by IP address? Anytime I click to add or edit, I get this screen:

It doesn't have a spot to manually punch in the IP address.
