NextPVR on Linux?

Hi, with the advent of Windows 10 and its subscription model, and all the Windows malware (disguised as patches or "Security Updates") in Win 7 and Win 8 to upgrade to Win 10, I am moving as many of my machines as I can away from Windows XP and to Linux Mint. It is most similar to Ubuntu, with some Debian capability, and a heavy emphasis on a friendly user interface.

I am a Linux newb, but have been on a learning curve. I am currently using Oracle VirtualBox (contained in Mint repository) and Crossover (a more polished paid product from the developers of free Wine).

So the big question. Has anyone loaded the NextPVR onto Wine, Crossover, or an XP VirtualBox running within Linux? All are options. Also there are two different versions of the OS which I could use for that machine - x86 and x64. The switch to Linux for the host OS would mainly be to stay current on best practices and updates with an OS of my preference.

I would keep the XP machine running as long as I needed to, while I set up the Linux machine next to it. Also I am using a Hauppauge HD-PVR2 as the encoder and wish to keep it.

I don't think you can run it with Wine.

You might be able to get it working in a VM. That said TV apps are also pretty hard on VMs, since they transfer and process a shitload of data continuously.

Realistically, you'd probably be better off with a Linux media center app, than trying to run a Windows one on Linux.

Ok, thanks. Some things for me to think about. Right now I think I will just leave it as-is. Nothing wrong with it, as it is just a stand-alone machine that has internet access and does nothing else. NextPVR is more important to me too.

Does xnewa do anything different from NEWA, the web browser scheduler? Right now I am just using NEWA for scheduling purposes, on a separate computer and web browser.

Right now I just use the NPVR computer in a minimalist configuration to encode files (using a Hauppauge HD-PVR2), then offload the files to a different HDD for processing and storage.

As far as getting the main program to run on Linux, has anyone made any notes on what Windows features or libraries it couldn't find? I might still play around with it some on an extra computer just for kicks.

xnewa is a plugin for Kodi, which communicates with NEWA. It provides two things:

1) it's own interface in Kodi for providing lists of recordings, watching live tv etc
2) remote client interface, which basically shows you NextPVR's UI (which looks just like you're using NextPVR).

I don't remember anyone explicitly trying, but I know it uses a lot of driver calls etc, which just aren't gonna be there with Wine.

I would start be seeing if you can get Hauppauge Capture running in Linux with Wine using your HDPVR2

A little over a year ago (or is it two now?) I spent a lot of time trying to get npvr running under Linux Mint using Crossover. It worker to run it as a client after MUCH struggle, but the problem is tuners. There are no BDA-drivers that can run under Crossover or Wine, and the developers of Crossover told me that they had no plans for implementing device handling, like tuners. So that door is pretty much closed.

Edit: On second thought, it just MIGHT be possible to get npvr running using Crossover with net based tuners that does not require native drivers, but I doubt it is worth the effort.

Just looking at if from a different direction... If your main intent is to avoid Windows 10, then don't install Windows 10. Windows 7 and 8.1 will continue to work for many years. I've played with 10 in a VM, but don't really see any reason to take the plunge, especially with Micosoft's "WE will decide when your OS will get updated" mentality.
