This would be consistent with your statement that "The channel lineup shows no Tv channels." because you don't have a CableCARD with a corresponding valid cable TV subscription lineup.
So, what I think that you are saying is that since Comcast has run a cable to your house for your Internet, you are/were able to receive and view Clear QAM channels (ones that are totally unencrypted by Comcast) even though you don't have a subscription for those channels via cable. I believe that in most (all?) markets, Comcast has eliminated Clear QAM channels specifically to prevent customers from doing what you describe (using a cable connection provided for telephone and/or Internet only to also receive cable TV channels). Here in St. Paul, MN, they made this change a couple of years ago and required all TVs and other 3rd party devices to use Digital Tuning Adapters (DTAs) or CableCARDs. NOTE: This encryption is different from the Digital Rights Management (DRM) that can be enforced through CableCARD devices (the "Copy Freely", "Copy Once", "Copy Never").
Actually i still have my CableCard. When i cancelled my cable subscription Comcast didn't ask for it back. Using the HD HomeRun Prime with CableCard inserted, i'm able to tune local broadcasts using WMC (every other channel gives subscription required message).
I can't do this using NextPVR.
