Hi ALL,

I have a Dell PC hooked to my TV acting as an HTPC. It used to run Win 7 and Win Media Center(WMC) with a Hauppauge TV tuner to record OTA channels. I now upgraded to Win 10 which no longer supports WMC so I installed NPVR and its working pretty well. The Dell came with an IR remote which supposedly was the standard when working with a Win PC and in fact all of its buttons functioned properly with WMC, including the "green" button that would start WMC. With NPVR many of the buttons on the Dell remote do work, but unfortunately not all of them. Specifically the green button and the blue button (to bring up the info bar during a video) do not work. I posted in the support section and got a lot of help and was even given some modified parts of NPVR to try to get all of my remote to work. Unfortunately those efforts were not successful.

So now I'm asking the community to tell me what remote they are using so I could buy one and then learn those buttons into my Harmony remote. So please post what brand and model IR remote you are using and if that remote's green and blue buttons are recognized by NPVR.

Thanks,
Gerry

It was my understanding (from back when I was looking at getting one) that you can program Harmony remotes from the internet, you don't need to have another remote for it to learn off.... meaning if you program is as a standard MCE remote (like the on in that photo) you should be good to go.

Hi Jaggy,

Yes, that's correct. The problem I have is that there seems to be a variation amongst MCE remotes because mine IS an MCE remote and again all of its buttons worked perfectly with Win Media Center. But unfortunately some of its keys are not recognized by NPVR. So I want to get an MCE remote that I know someone has been successfully using with NPVR and all its buttons are recognized by NPVR. Then I can manually learn some of the buttons from that MCE remote and overwrite what's currently in the Harmony so that whey will then work. The Harmony on-line data base is so huge that there are times when I have programed it from the database but still had to learn a few buttons manually.

But for now forget about the Harmony. The original Dell remote IS an MCE remote and all buttons worked with WMC. But some of its buttons do not work with NPVR. Do you use a remote with NPVR and if so could you post its make and model.

Thanks,
Gerry

I suspect you will have the same configuration problems with any WMC remote.

Hi Martin,

Are you saying that none of the MCE remotes have all of their buttons recognized by NPVR? If so, then why is there an option in the MPVR settings to start NPVR when the green button is pressed on an MCE remote? Are there any other remotes that work with NPVR?

Thanks,
Gerry

Easiest solution is to run a separate program that translates the IR signal,Since you already have a receiver that works it should be pretty straight forward
I use irss.exe (it's actually found on media portal site but works great) haven't used it on w10 but don't see why it wouldn't work.

I use this one, and it starts NextPVR with the green button:

Search for posts by me. I have posted several times about MCE remotes and configuring them for NPVR. Back in the day, I tweaked my remote to implement the green MCE button as well as the blue button to send alt-B and yellow to send alt-Y. I also assigned a button for F7 for aspect ratio. These have continued to work for years now. sub may have added some features so the green MCE button and the blue button work natively so the tweaks are not needed.

I normally use a Harmony remote using the Logitech profiles for the Windows Media Center PC and the Microsoft keyboard (I think). I can post more tomorrow, no time at the moment.

Update: forget searching for my posts. Search for MCE remote with no software by pbs

It looks like this:

I also use IRSS.exe to control it. I don't have the "Green button" like MCE remotes, but I programmed IRSS to have the Power button start NPVR. I also programmed all the other buttons with IRSS to use Windows messages to the NPVR executable even when it doesn't have focus. I have a monitor & TV attached to the computer. I can use the keyboard & mouse with whatever is running on the monitor at the same time I control NPVR on the TV with the remote.

Does the green logo button MCE remote even work on Windows 10? I thought MS removed eHome and that this button was tied to it.
