Way to choose transcode setting on HDHR Extend?

The HDHR Extend has a variety of settings for the level of transcoding it applies to the ATSC MPEG2 stream in order to provide h.264. I have it set to "mobile" because that generally offers the best compromise between quality and recording file size. However, there are certain shows I record mostly for building a library (syndicated sitcoms etc), and I'm willing to sacrifice more quality for a smaller file size. I can always transcode later, but that defeats the purpose of buying the HDHR Extend in the first place!

So, my question is: for any given NPVR scheduled recording, is there a way to pass the quality setting to the HDHR device?

Thanks - Bob

No - it happens outside of NextPVR. ie, you'd manage this in whatever software the HDHR Extend supplies for configuring this.

This device is the only one of it's type that includes a transcoding capability. At this stage I can't see the point in expending a large amount of effort to build this feature for one device that isn't that common.

Ok, thanks for letting me know. I was hoping the <quality> tag had been mapped.

I don't have one of these devices, so haven't really spent a lot of time thinking about them, otherwise I might have added some thing like this. Maybe in the future.

Thanks for responding - I understanding it's not a very popular device. I wish US ATSC would transition to h264 so I could just forget about this transcoding business for good.

Let me know if there is anything I can do to help if you decide to poke around with this.

I have seen test broadcast streams for ATSC 2 / ATSC 3 using H.264 and H.265. I'm not sure how / when newer technology like this might be adopted in the US.

The NAB 2016 convention has ended. ATSC has submitted their proposal(s) to the FCC for ATSC 3.0. They want everything to be voluntary. TV set manufacturers do not have to put the tuner chip in their sets. Stations do not have to switch to ATSC 3.0. No mandatory dead lines like the switch from analog to digital. ATSC 3.0 will be H.265 only. No MPEG 2. No H.264. The existing MPEG transport stream used in ATSC 1.0 will be replaced by the current IP protocol used for the internet. My best guess is that for OTA reception you will go out and buy settop box that will have an output of Wi-Fi, Ethernet, and or HDMI. God only knows about PVR functionality. Here is a link to a video from the NAB convention. http://www.avsforum.com/live-from-nab-20...tent=more1
