This has happened a couple of times since upgrading to v4.1, the most recent was a TS recording of 'The X-Files' on Fox. The show was recorded earlier, and there was apparently a less than perfect OTA broadcast signal.

After two attempts, I was able to play the file successfully using VLC, and I did notice some stuttering and dropouts at the same place in the program. It crashed NextPVR at exactly the same place both times.

If you create a c:\temp directory, do you get a c:\temp\crash.mdmp file when this happens?

I have just created a c:\temp directory, but unfortunately I deleted the troublesome show after watching it to completion. Will have to wait for another episode of NextPVR mayhem to check for a .mdmp file.

Ok - let me know when it happens again.

I might also need to grab a copy of the problem file next time it happens - hopefully I'll be able to reproduce the problem with the same file, which will make it a lot easier for me to find the cause and fix.

Just got another crash with a different recorded episode of the same series, same local FOX OTA HDTV broadcast network. File is a 5.53GB .ts stream, length 1:01:57. This is 'The X-Files', season 11, episode 10.

I did get a 'c:\temp\crash.mdmp' file this time.

Edit: Just updated to NextPVR 4.1.1 and tried again. Got the same crash again.

Just a quick update. I found a couple more recordings that cause NPVR to exit with an APPCRASH. These came from another station, NBC, rather than Fox.

This error only started happening after updating to NPVR 4.1.0, and continued with 4.1.1, so I decided to roll back to NPVR 4.0.4.

Problem solved!

Obviously there are some issues with these .ts files, as the Fox and NBC broadcast towers are at the outer limits of the range for my indoor antenna. So some errors and dropouts do occur occasionally, but it mostly depends on weather conditions.

The typical error behavior in NPVR 4.0.4, and earlier, was usually some occasional pixelation, or in other cases the playback would hang, and I could just skip forward 30 secs to bypass the bad data.

Since these .ts recordings with errors are playable in an older version of NPVR, as well as VLC, I can only assume that something has been changed recently in NPVR regarding error handling for .ts playback.

With 6 years of playing back .ts files recorded via OTA, my primary playback app is MP-HC. I have found it to be the best at gracefully handling signal corruption with OTA. If MP-HC chokes then I give WMP a shot. If WMP also chokes, then I just forget about that recording and look for a streaming app that has that episode.

Hey scJohn, thanks for the feedback!

I have been recording and playing back .ts from OTA for 12 years, beginning with Snapstream BeyondTV, which eventually went end of life, and then I replaced that with NextPVR as my PVR of choice.

I have other playback apps including Windows Media Center, Hauppauge WinTV, Kodi, and VLC. So I agree that there will be times that playback will choke due to a corrupted .ts file, and that can be frustrating, but ...

My issue at this point is that nothing else has changed recently in my media center setup except for the updated version of NextPVR. It has never completely crashed before with an 'APPCRASH' error due to a bad stream. So just wondering what the heck, all of a sudden...? Smile

On a positive note, have not had a crash since rolling back to NPVR 4.0.4, everything is stable again, and those bad streams are now playable with NPVR! Smile

Can you possibly supply one of these problem recordings? I'll run it up here in the debugger to see if I can find the cause.

Sure, thanks, glad to help find the cause. Any suggestions for where to host the recording file? I have handbrake installed, so I may be able to trim it down from multi GB's, but I wouldn't want to convert the format...
