Hi nextPVR community,

I am new in the nextPVR world. Few weeks ago I donwloaded and installed nextPVR, Live TV is working great, but am having an EPG problem and hope that somebody can help me to solve it. First of all a couple of details about the “environment”:

WIN 7 64 bit
Kodi 17.6. as frontend
nextPVR as backend
DVB-S TV-Tuner Digital Devices CINE S2 with twin tuner

The problem is, neither via Kodi nor direct in nextPVR the EPG is updating automatically. My intention is to update the EPG OTA. This works flawlessly when I start it manually in Settings/Channels Update EPG, but if I don’t start it manually nothing happens.

In nextPVR, Settings/Misc, automatically update EPG is activated and I supposed that with this switch, the EPG is updated automatically every time the PC is on, no matter what time is set in the field upfront and no matter if I watch TV or not? By the way, the update method is set DVB/ATSC.

Am I doing something wrong or did I miss an important step?

I hope you guys can guide me through this

We will need to see the NextPVR logs. Please set the time for the auto EPG update to a time about 15 minutes in the future ... reboot to restart new logs ... wait until about 15 minutes after the time of the auto EPG update ... Start NextPVR, go to NextPVR Settings --> About and click the button to zip the logs ... attach the log zip file to a new post. Thank you.

Nothing happened yet because you've got it set to happen at midnight:

Last night's EPG update looks like it might not have happened because you had the tuner in use with Live TV at the time. (the EPG update is linked to a specific tuner, and isn't moved to another tuner if it's in use)

Hi Sub. Something that I don't understand is how long is it supposed to take for the EPG to update the show schedule for channels that have their source set to OTA for EPG with NPVR?

If I use only my TV or hardware PVRs I get the description of the current tv show from the OTA signal either instantly or in a few seconds. The hardware PVR can also assemble some 6-8 hours of future programs for whatever channel you are tuned to in a few minutes (lets say 5-10 to be reasonable) if the channel is supplying that info (PBS in my area is usually pretty good with this). I guess the PBS OTA signal must be sending the shows on a repeating cycle of some kind.

My experience with the Hauppauge WinTV usb tuner and npvr is that the OTA source EPG almost never updates unless the preset time for the EPG update ticks by. Is this observation inline with what one should expect from NPVR with a usb tuner? Or is there some other setting that could be made to improve OTA epg updates .. like once an hour?

Many thanks

Edward

The auto EPG update happens once per day at the time set at NextPVR Settings --> Misc2.

The only way to get it to update more often is to click the button at NextPVR Settings --> Channels.

There are problems doing an EPG update while tuners are in use and once a day works everywhere except North America so it is not likely that there will ever be an option to go more than once per day.

Graham is correct.

A little more info to add... During the EPG update, NextPVR spends some time on each frequency you get listings from. It spends a full minute on each frequency though, because that is how long it typically takes in DVB parts of the world, where they often give a week or so of listings. NextPVR is likely gets the few hours of listings available in your ATSC broadcasts in about 10 seconds, maybe less - in ATSC land you could reduce the time by tweaking a value in config.xml. 60 seconds is the default, because most users would need that long (DVB users).

That is correct - NextPVR only looks for listings once a day. Realistically, if your broadcaster has less than a day of listings, you're better off switching to another source like Schedules Direct etc. A few hours of listings is next to useless.

TV was definitely off and I left nextPVR on the main menu screen. Also Kodi was closed.

By the way, after Graham gave nme the test instructions, I always set the time in the misc2 screen to 20 minutes after the actual time.

But if I understand you well guys, nextPVR updates the EPG via OTA:

- Only at the given time in the screen Misc2. So if the PC is off at that time - e.g. 20:00:00 and you turn on the PC at 21:00:00 nextPVR does not catch-up the missed update anymore.
-In case the PC is on and you are watching TV at the given update time, the update is also not taking place because the tuner is busy. And a twin tuner might also be busy with recordings ort time-shifting

?

If this is the case, nexrPVR ist probably not the backend for me as my htpc is on approx. 3 -4 times per week and I would need that it updates the EPG in the background, at least if I am watching a movie or listening to music from the HDD, no matter what time it is.

You can get NextPVR to update the EPG using the -updateepg command line option in a batch file ... http://www.nextpvr.com/nwiki/pmwiki.php?...ineOptions

You could use Windows Task Scheduler to run the batch file whenever you want and to run at the next opportunity if it misses the scheduled time.

Sorry I don't quite get it..could you give me an example of how the updateepg.bat could look like if I just want to update the EPG via OTA, but not start nextPVR completely?
just creating an autoupdate.bat with what command exactely?
If the command line is nextpvr.exe -updateepg, nextpvr will launch, not only the service

??
