:p As there are at least three GBPVR users in Hong Kong I'd like to start a special thread for us to discuss the issues affecting us due to our location. Some of this comes from my searches around, and some from JKSmurf's posts elsewhere on this board.

Hardware : I bought a Hauppage PVR 150MCE card at DV Club shop, 1st floor Wanchai computer Centre. It had no remote control and cost HK$880. They also had the PVR 500 for about HK$1,500. That seems expensive, but I wish now I had bought the two channel 500 model so that I can watch a different channel when recording.

Weather : The Weather plugin on GBPVR.com has a setting for HK and seems to work well enough. You can change it to show deg C instead of farenheit by selecting "SI units" in the properties. I would prefer to get the data from http://www.underground.org.hk, particularly wind predictions and speed histories. Has anyone done that?

TV schedules : The best software to do this seems to be TVxb, which has the local broadcast stations, Star and Now broadband. JKSmurf has done some work customising these as the standard settings are not quite perfect. See http://forums.nextpvr.com/showthread.php?t=8339. Some of the program descriptions downloaded from the channel websites seem quite long, and often have the Chinese version before the English, so it doesn't display well on the standard schedule screen.

Now Broadband : It ought to be possible to use an irBlaster pointing at your Now Broadband to get GBPVR to change it to the right channel. I haven't tried this yet but intend to. I have successfully connected the Now broadband to the Hauppage card via an S-video cable, with broadcast TV coming in to the aerial socket.

NTSC / PAL : In my apartment block (in Discovery Bay) we get the terrestrial channels and several STAR TV channels mixed together in the analogue signal coming from the "aerial" socket in the wall. Most of these are in PAL, but BBC World is in NTSC. The Pal version of the hauppage card can't decode that so the choice is either to get another (NTSC version) card just for that channel, or (if you have NOW broadband) subscribe to it on that for an extra HK$12 a month. I'll go for the latter I think.

Does anyone know of a local shop selling good looking, small computer cases suitable for living room use?

Has anyone tried any local brand of remote control, or is it worth getting the more expensive hauppage one?

Also bought DV Club, but in Sham Shui Po. Hauppuage Prices territory wide seem standardised, Mong Kok, SSP, Wanchai.

Just buy a PVR-150 WITH the remote:-)

Not sure way around this. You will need to speak to BillD at TVxB to see if we can strip out the Chinese Chars. Sure its possible!

I bought a USB-UIRT. Works fine. http://www.usbuirt.com (surprise!) I attach the definition file for the NOWBB Box, but actually it is a 1 min job to "learn" it anway. The USB device is not cheap (55USD + Postage), but works well, and possible to expand to other devices in the house. Of course IR Blaster, if it COMES with the Tuner Card, is better value...

That's what I have too.

Wanchai, SSP, Mong Kok, ALL have shops selling small cases these days. I was surprised, but some other folks must be putting these systems together...

I have the Hauppage with my mediaMPV unit (over a Wireless Router and Quiet too)

Cheers

For stripping chinese chars, you might be able to set up a proxy on the machine, maybe privoxy, and set up rules to just throw out char sequences with chinese characters. That might get you workable results without having to resort to special code in GBPVR itself.

Hopefully GBPVR is set up to use Internet Explorer's connection settings so it'll use a proxy if so configured.

I figured out TVXb can do this.
It's in the setup ini script, just choose the right encoding.

Hey Guys

I am also in HK. Has anybody been able to get the Happauge PVR150 to work with either the NOW STB or the iCable STB?

I am currently using Girder & A GlobalCache device and it sometimes fails on the communication.

ANy help would be appreciated.

In theory the GC is a device that brings PCs to home applicance. Using TCPIP you can send IR, Serial and Relay command all out from one box. Pretty cool.

It works with Girder & NetRemote. Purchased because of my Grand Plan to have a Web Tablet as my remote control (suprisingly not there yet)

www.globalcache.com

Only problem I have is a bug in Girder that sometimes just drops a channel number on channel change.

Glad that I come across this post that is specific to HK. I recently purchased the Hauppauge 150MCE that comes with a MCE remote for $1020. I got most of the basic stuff working, and would like to 'tweak' a little bit.

Under MCE, I setup the TV source as antenna, with my icable tv box signal source comes from channel 59. Is there anyway I can use my remote to control the cable settop box? I once tried to setup cable as the tv source in MCE, and the ir blaster can change channel on the cable box. But with this setup I lost control to the 4 free channels.

ALso, I want to programe the remote to learn cable's remote, but the DVD Menu+Ok button seems not working for my remote. Any ideas?

Thanks!

OK - I am not an MCE expert so probably can't help alot here.

The 150 only has 1 Tuner so you can either have 5 channels but not control your set-top box. Or 1 fixed channel (59) and then use external tuner settings to control the iCable box.

I don't know about MCE and the MCE blaster, but Girder and USB_Uirt work quite well with GB-PVR.

Try posting on "The Green Button" (don't know the actually link - just the name of the site) for MCE specific advice.

There is an update to the wiki about MCE remotes, using HIP rather than girder. It works.

Read here :

I think you should be able to get both your terrestrial and cable channels going through the 150 by setting up an extra input in the gbpvr config program. Have that input set to use an external program as the remote - hipsend.exe with the channel number as a parameter
