Sorry, I dont know anything about this hardware hack to add an optical plug to the MVP. I would guess its impossible. The MVP only accepts MP3 audio.

so it must be playing mp3 over my optical ?. Do you have a receiver that can use an optical, gbpvr works fine with it.

I havent done this MP3 optical mod, so its not something I can try.

I dont think it'll pass mp3 over the optical. I think the MVP would decode the MP3 and pass PCM over the optical.

I have been contemplating the optical mod for one of my MVPs for a while and obtained an MSI SPDIF bracket for this purpose.

I have held back from carrying out the upgrade for two reasons. Firstly I was not sure what benefit it would give me as I use GBPVR exclusively on the MVPs and more importantly I am not convinced about my soldering capability!

You say that the mod works fine with GBPVR Ryanmc but do you get better quality audio as a result. My Toshiba TV supports Dolby Digital 5.1 with SPDIF and coaxial inputs so should I proceed or would I just end up with the same sound but even more wiring! There is even discussion in the post that the MVP can support AC3 audio but I got a bit lost at that point.

ArfurAnt:
In my oppinion the difference in sound over the spdif is huge.
If your not comfortable with soldering maybe you could have a someone else do it its not too difficult.

I demuxed a dvd and then remuxed the mpeg 2 stream with an ac3 stream and it did play. however i dont know if it was passed to the receiver for decoding or was done on the pc, maybe this weekend ill do another one and see.

Im not sure about how hooking the optical to your tv will be as far as quality mine goes through a receiver.

As far as having more wiring that shouldnt be the case an optical cable is one cable vs. the analog which is 2 (l&r).

Ryanmc,
Thanks for the information it sounds worth while doing. I shall have a go in a couple of weeks when I have some spare time. I have 4 MVPs so it wouldn't be the end of the world if I messed one up!
I shall let you know how I get on,
Regards,
ArfurAnt.

rynammc. Did you get this working for playing MP3's using GBPVR to the MPV, to your stereo? The reason I ask is whether the dongle.bin that is supplied with GBPVR works with this modification, explained in the link posted by Arfurant above. That link has a post which states:

Quote:I am going to assume that all you really want is to pass your music collection to your amplifier using an optical TOSLINK / SPDIF connection. You probably don't need any new software or dongle.bin. I would venture a guess that the original software can do this (recall, I have never used the original software). So all you probably need is to add the TOSLINK / SPDIF interface. Regarding AC3 pass through - I doubt the original software provides for this.
This site has some nice details. http://home.xnet.com/~stuart/images/medi...ndex.shtml

My wife is an Electronics Engineer (IC's and stuff), so she can solder pretty well :-)
