ffmpeg--what is it? Do I need it?

My dream is to be as smart as those of you who can answer my questions!

What is ffmpeg? I think i know what it is, but why do people use it? I don't have it installed and things seem to be working fine, but will things work even better if i use it? Anyone have a "dummy's guide to ffmpeg"?

Ffmpeg is a Mac program for editing and authoring DVD's.
Ffmpeggui is a windows (actually it's a GUI for a DOS program) to transcode various audio sources into AC3 or MP2.

ffmpeg (running on many platforms including XP, W2K) is used to transcode between various formats such as mpeg, divx and avi.

If you do not need to transcode (such as convert mpeg into divx for size reduction in archiving) you do not need ffmpeg
