Actually, I've got it - sort of - and this may help others...

After terminating the process, the file shows up in settings>Security & Privacy where you can "override" the issue (see attached screenshot).

The problem is that I am having to go through this on a lot of the files (I have stopped for now after authorising ~10 of them).

The root cause is that the app is not notarised (a new requirement for Catalina) preventing Catalina from checking developer integrity and check for malicious content so each file need a manual "OK".

I will try again tomorrow, but if I have to override for every file I will probably give up long before I complete.  I imagine this will prevent new users from ever trying the app out.

I'm not sure there is any easy way around this. I think you can only get the app signed by having it distributed via the mac app store, but this isn't really the sort of app that'd work well for distribution that way.

It looks like this might be an option too:

Yeah, it's a pain. I suspect we'll only ever have a very small handful of mac users though...

This should never be done.  It's the equivalent of leaving your door open for everyone because you haven't got a cat-flap.

I disagree.  If you trust the source you should be able to enable this for one install.  If you are downloading lots of unknown crap of course that is a different story.

Agreed. But that link is telling you how to switch Gatekeeper off in it's entirety, or have I misunderstood?

It tells you how to turn it on and off and advises against it so I would say it was more for adhoc use. I do this all the time for apk's on Android, Kodi plugins etc and zip's from the internet. Trusting just an antivirus is not a good idea.

Thanks for sticking with me through my moment of idiocy - I can see now that it simply brings back the option to allow apps from any developer (which you can still toggle)  - I thought it permanently switched off any checking.

thanks!
