Hello,

If I have merged the same channel with differing feeds and one of the channels goes off line, will the other channel become active and take over? This could apply to while the channel is playing and upon initial selection of the channel?

Thank you,
Mark

Hi Martin,

Thanks for the answer.

If I may ask a followup question, if this is not how merged channels work, what is the purpose of merging channels in the first place?

Thank you,
Mark

You merge channels with the same EPG information. As an example if you have multiple identical tuners you would only need to show one row for each channel in the guide and NextPVR handles the recordings live tv etc.

Your use case was a different EPG for at least one channel. I don't know if you can unmerge one channel or not.

You always just risk manage it and merge the two channels anyway with the 24 guide. If the main channel is off air the shows in off air are probably filler anyway.

Martin,

Perhaps I need to make clear what I was asking. If I have two IPTV services, each have identical channels that would have identical EPG data (obtained from SD). How would merged channels operate in this case? Would one take over for the other if it is not receiving and information from provider?

Also....should channels, in above scenario, each have EPG data or should channels be merged before matching with EPG data.

Thank you,
Mark

Sorry I didn't realize you were talk about unreliable streams. NextPVR assumes tuners will be available when requested there is some fall back on failure but I don't know what NextPVR will do if it fails on the first connect to IPTV. If it fails during recording you will have a failed recording.

Martin.

The main purpose of the merged channels is so that multiple tuners (or IPTV sources) can do recordings for that channel. ie, if you had two tuners, with a pile of merged channels, either one could be used for recording a specific channel (like if the other was in-use for something).

If tries to start a recording on one tuner (or IPTV source), and it fails to start, it will look for another available tuner (or IPTV source) for a second chance at starting the recording. (it wont switch tuners or IPTV sources mid recording if something goes wrong)
