Why does ffmpeg use 100% CPU

Hello!

New to NextPVR

I have trouble with my ffmpeg using 100% CPU

Windows 10 - Newest NextPVR - HDHomeRun Prime - Intel I5 - 8G

The system appears to record fine in general, but by the end of a recording the CPU is always pegged 100% usage by ffmpeg

Any ideas on what may be wrong with my config?

I'm recording 2 games right now, watching one in the browser as it happens.  Well, 5 minutes left in the game and now NextPVRserver is unresponsive.  It's been happening all through the game where it just stops.  I've been lucky to exit out and resume but now there's no response from the browser viewer.  Afraid to restart anything because I fear having both my recordings lost.

The web client is not the ideal client for PVR use for tuners because transcoding is required, it is more geared to IPTV playback or light use. The Windows client and clients like Kodi don't require this and would be preferred.

Additionally are you opting to auto transcode recordings? That would appear to be the case and will really hit your CPU if you have lots going on again that is not recommended unless you really want to use the web app.

With a recent machine you might be able to enable HW transcoding to reduce the CPU a bit on the Settings Transcode option but you should check out the other client option for all but basic playback.

"Are you opting to auto transcode recordings?" - well, obviously I'm not sure what's best.  I have no preference other than a reliable experience. 

If under the "Transcoder" tab I do set these back to "Default" and "Leave recordings in native format", would that do the trick?

I'm on the cusp of cutting the cord so I've been experimenting with NextPVR etc.  When I go full OTA I see an eventual KODI or Plex install.  Trying to sort through all the players while I'm still on cable and before resistance from my wife becomes a factor.  Anything too technical or unreliable will result in her automatic veto.

Any reassurance you could offer that there's a wife friendly install possible would also be helpful.

Yes on the transcoder tab set those back and when recordings finish things will be better for you.

You basically need to determine client software (generally NextPVR or Kodi) and hardware (do you want the backend computer hooked up to the PC or are you looking at one or more other devices). If you are using a remote or not will impact WAF too.

If you aren't hooking the PC up to the TV, determing if you want Plex, Emby or Kodi infrastructures in your house becomes part of the decision. There is no right or wrong answer here. I do know with a good signal and good guide data NextPVR is a very stable PVR whichever client you choose.

I would add that many users have W's with high WAF's. So NextPVR is probably a good choice for you.

If you don't already have Plex, Emby or Kodi is use (particularly by the W), I'd probably recommend Kodi. My feel is that the majority of the users operating in server/client mode right now are using Kodi. And it has "direct" connection to NextPVR via both a Kodi PVR add-on and the knewc add-on.
