Most desirable drive configuration for recording?

Hello,  have a working NextPVR v5 configuration, with Hauppauge DVB-T digital tuners and Hauppauge Colossus and STB with IR blasting configured.
Use Kodi Matrix for front end most of the time, but the NextPVR client works well too.

I am very pleased with NextPVR 5.

Just wondered if there is a so termed 'recommended' or optimized recording drive configuration?

I currently use two Seagate USB 3  external hard drives.  One has all my movies etc, and the other is a dedicated recording drive.
I also have a separate SSD drive I use for timeshift only.

I sometimes find that if I am recording a number of shows simultaneously to one USB drive, whilst at the same time trying to playback say a movie from the other USB 3 drive, that things start to glitch out a bit, and get stutters on playback etc.  Also, similar behavior when multiple recording, and then trying to playback a recording from same drive.

Usually no issues,  but on occasion might be recording 3  channels from digital, and one from STB using Colossus.
Presumably it is the limitation of using the USB 3 bus.

Are there any tips or tricks that could help improve performance for a USB 3 type drive configuration?

Mainly went the USB3 route, as got Seagate Backup Plus external USB3 drives for good value per TB, so have one 6TB drive and one 10TB drive.
The 6TB drive is the current recording drive. Previously I had a RAID 1 config running off my motherboards built in hardware RAID.
It worked really well, but a raid drive would periodically fail quite often, so I tried the external USB 3 Seagate backup plus drives, and they are like bulletproof so far.
(apart from the limitations of the USB 3 bus)

Would having two recording paths (1 on each USB 3 drive) likely make any difference?
Or am I better to look to an array, or NAS?

Like I said, it is nothing dire or anything, and the single USB 3 recording drive has worked pretty bloody well, but just notice things struggle a bit under certain load conditions.

Just wondered what NextPVR users would deem 'the most desirable'  recording drive config for NextPVR 5?

Thanks for your time.

If your computer has separate USB3 buses for certain groupings of ports, putting the drives on separate buses would remove a potential bottleneck. There's no way to know from looking at the ports, so you might have to dig around in the technical docs. For instance, my MacBook Pro has two USB3 buses. One for the left hand ports and one for the right hand ports.

And having said that, internal SATA drives are probably the "best" configuration option. But USB3 can work to if you can balance the loads.

I was wondering if NextPVR 5  has the capability of when a recording ends, if it can automatically move that recording somewhere else?

ie. Was thinking of getting two modest sized, very fast SSD drives, and striping them together to form a RAID0 array.
Then just use that as high performance recording volume, then somehow do the above, and backup the recording to the main large USB3 recordings drive.

Is that doable?, and would a RAID0 array give the desired performance jump I am looking for?, or is it just really a wasted experiment.

If the user creates a PostProcessing.bat file, this will be run automatically at the end of each recording. In that batch file, the user could move the file to another location, and maybe run "NScriptHelper -rename x y" to have NextPVR update it's database.

Thanks Sub.

I was vaguely aware of that ability from V4 I think, but had never looked into it further.
Will certainly look into both of your suggestions, as is exactly what I wanted to try and do.

Just trying to eek out some recording performance.

Appreciate the knowledge..
..cheers..

PKscout,   After checking my mobo's specifications, it does have two USB 3.0 controllers..... 4 rear ports, and 4 ports via internal headers, which I think I have connected to the front ports of the case enclosure, and are not being used.

The mobo also has 8 USB 2.0 ports, so I should be able to reorganize all my minor peripherals to use USB 2.0, and then place both of the Seagate USB3.0 hard drives on their own separate controller, and see if that enhances performance.

Thanks for your suggestions.
