So here's the issue I'm having:

I have NextPVR set up on a Windows box, using Kodi as a front end, set to sleep on 30 minutes of inactivity, and 5 minutes unattended sleep timeout, and it runs through the HDMI passthrough on my Xbox One X right now. Normally this works great for me.

But I'm looking ahead, and eventually the Xbox One X is probably going to get pulled out and moved into another room and I will just have the Xbox Series X in here. And often it's useful for me to use the Kodi client on the Xbox to access the DVR, so I have that set up as well. BUT: when I watch Live TV (with an HDHomeRun Prime, properly configured through NextPVR on the Windows box) the box will sleep when the 30 minutes expires.

I do not want to turn off that 30-minute sleep.

What I want is for NextPVR to send some kind of ping every few minutes to the OS when it's playing back LiveTV that says "hey, yo, Windows, still awake over here!" simply so Windows notes something is active and doesn't go to sleep.

Right now I'm playing around with SmartPower, which seemed like a good solution because I could set a network threshold (if more than 2Mbps are travelling over the network interface, then clearly its pumping out a video stream of some sort, so stay awake), but you have to give it full control over it telling your machine to sleep instead of simply being able to say "if these conditions are satisfied, stay up, otherwise let Windows do its thing" so I suspect it's not gonna work long-term.

Anyone have an idea how I could make that ping happen myself, or if that couple lines of code are something the devs would consider?

NextPVR should already be telling Windows not to sleep while recording (which includes Live TV) so it is not clear what you want to achieve. There might be an issue during recording playback, sub would need to comment on that.

Kodi has an option to send WOL too. I find that it takes about 20 seconds to wake from an NVME drive.

Bandwidth won't help a long pause.

Yeah, recording is never a problem; this is specifically a Live TV playback thing. I definitely have playback set to timeshift on the PVR plugin on the Series X, and I do have it send WOL when I load the client in case the system is asleep when I fire up the client on the X, so that isn't an issue. It just seems to think it's idle when watching Live TV.

I'm still messing with SmartPower. Right now the question is whether SmartPower will let it sleep when it's supposed to, but right now it's recording something so I can't say for absolute certain until this recording ends. Smile

That sounds like a bug then, which requires you to upload zipped logs showing the problem.

...and here we go! I changed the sleep time to 10 minutes to expedite things, but it still did it, just as expected. Closed down the Xbox, rewoke the PC, and immediately produced logs.

Thanks. I normally use Linux but set up a quick test on Windows and can confirm the same error. It looks like NextPVR doesn't respond to Suspend and the network connections die and the PC also sleeps.

What is worse, it recordings also suffer from the same issue on may machine, at least from an Extra so I am not sure NextPVR is actually blocking sleep without NTray running.

Code:
2022-05-02 18:41:04.170    [DEBUG][8]    [Suspend]
2022-05-02 18:41:04.181    [ERROR][18]    Unexpected error processing m3u8 url (http://172.16.3.78:80/.../pl.m3u8?....  [dNffrfpbffpMBS7H4Bhx7CzrjDfsUKQ20wq6k4MNslwv7alzxRnMvPa+LhQs/bxJGVEZrgKHPyG1hS4hBSFZFJurGKODsRrijanc++X9HqEczK8p+03myqMuj6VabBA8oz48wUGFqfMJbd1TWx2VsaTGFGnP1aPwTxiMFMPpvXJNAQoLcXLfAx+xLrnn2RwUfpM7W3YjBjzCwqWVSXf6VdkVF75iyJLtXXurb8f0LBrDs3n9ShNXZNbQPixJt4OEbs76Ips8T/QYuv+WPVmyNq5LpbJRVf7J8R/Xcqs+wsk5+V+o5ngHSj6956218bTPFXBPBdzj4T6KDR57dorUJTzmo0z62aPeag+g5a4thfTGJi1CQB3+NiOAjBd3OiF6JHdFCO+iej+oJ+NvklmgKdoSHVfohXUed9naP18cIALiWEG6C+gierIrFVTkRTzA]): System.Net.Http.HttpRequestException: A socket operation was attempted to an unreachable host.
---> System.Net.Sockets.SocketException (10065): A socket operation was attempted to an unreachable host.

Hopefully sub can look at this.

Recordings I seem to be good with....once I fixed that Unattended Sleep Timeout issue, the system was able to wake a couple minutes early like I wanted it to, everything's able to enumerate with each other in time for the recording to start, and it'll record a three-hour hockey game on a timer no problem, and then drop right back to sleep again before I get home from said game.

And playback locally is similarly fine...if I'm tuned to the old Xbox the HTPC is running through and watching directly through the HTPC, no problem. It's specifically when the HTPC is operating essentially headless (stereo and TV are on different inputs when the Series X is running things, so there's no HDMI handshake completing to the HTPC) and simply sending the network stream to the Series X client (the Series X is what 10.0.0.217 is) where sleep happens uninvited. That's why I was hoping using SmartPower to simply have a 2Mbit or more network stream from the HTPC act as another keep-alive condition would work, but it doesn't quite work that way.

Just wait for sub to respond, it shouldn't be sleeping streaming live tv or while recording.

I think there is a difference with recordings if the tray app is running too, mine sleeps while recording if the tray app is closed but things are OK for recordings (not live TV from a client) if it is running. I thought the tray app was just supposed to warn if a user tried to shutdown will recording and not control sleep.
