The reality is you typically need quite a beefy server if you're going to be transcoding content in real time, and more so if you're going to be doing it for multiple clients simultaneously.

Smoothness and quality will come down to your machine being able to keep up, and an appropriate bitrate for the type of content you're dealing with.

The experience will never be as good as playing the native streams, but it's there as an option for the situations where it's needed.

I should probably use native stream all the time and get a 4G sim card with unlimited data. But the companie's free data concept is only 1000 Gb per month. Therefore the attempt to send/receive less data. I can get unlimited fiber, but it will cost more.

Also keep in mind, just about every user here is in a setup where the server and clients are on the same network, so the main focus is across local network, not across the internet...so what you're describing is not a common scenario.

I Know. It is just a great thing to have kodi/nextpvr on the phone, kodi/nextpvr on a device in a summerhouse and other ideas :-) The VPN i use is Zerotier. It works with a router and a sim card. No manual port forwardings :-)

Yes i would think that too.  But after having used this Virtual Private Network ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ZeroTier ) for a while i have found that the speed is no issue at all. It was at the start but this was due to a poor network company. Their antenna system is bad. There are one or two 4G companies here that deliver a poor network but i have now found a good 4G network and the price is ok. The VPN encrypts the data and the devices can communicate like on a local network. This is one of the purposes of VPN. 5G is here already but the routers are not yet affordable.
As for nextpvr/kodi , the native streams play fine from far away. I can even with a different program stream large files of for example 25 GB over the vpn from home to a different location. I am very happy with the solution.

Have you enabled transcoded playback in Kodi (in the addon settings)? By default the Kodi addon is asking for the full stream. You need to explicitly tell it to use transcoded streams instead. The settings you're tweaking above will make no difference when kodi is using the full stream.

Is this setting still working in 2025 in the Kodi add-on? I have mine set to:

Live TV method: Transcoded
Transcoding profile: 144

But Kodi is clearly still receiving the original recording's resolution/bitrate, rather than a transcoded 144p video.

Edit: Btw, the web browser transcoding setting of 144p works, so my issue is only that the Kodi add-on Transcoding profile does not.

Thanks; yes, I was testing recordings and wasn't reading that closely enough! Do any of the Android implementations support transcoding recordings?

And, unfortunately, now I'm running into a bug with web playback, but I'll have to make a separate post for that once I can reproduce it.
