Yep, pretty much this.

I'd looked into it in the past, but didn't seem worth it to tie up tuners, or offer it for a such a small subset of channels.

I also experimented with continually recording all the NZ freeview channels, and keeping like 3 days of history at all times. It was pretty hard on the machine's disk. It was a pretty niche feature that didn't seem worth fleshing out into a real solution.

Yes, I can totally see the point here. A niche feature indeed. Although, maybe some users with tuners that can access multiple channels at once could set this feature on one of their fav sports or news channels for example.

If I, for example, recorded 2hours of content every two hours could I just go and listen to the current recording while it's being recorded giving me the ability to rewind it?

Also a little update, it seems to be working well. The default streaming buffer is perhaps a little long/large and introduced a 10-second delay. So I'll turn that down when i work out how.  The mic input had a heck of a lot of signal processing which needed to be turned off. Listening to the stream and adjusting mic settings and the radio volume was a fun activity.

thanks again for all the help

Which client are you listening in? A direct play client may not need as much of a buffer, The buffer length won't matter here.

Yes you could do 2 hour manual recordings. Are you sure this is for personal use only?

so the biggest buffer i noticed was with the web player. it's not as bad ising the android client.one problem is that the Android client doesn't play audio in the background when the screen is locked. does anyone have any tips.

Yes it is 100% for my own personal use.

Try Kodi or NextPVR.exe

Thanks for confirming not many people are so concerned about 45 second delays and missing minutes when listening to radio.

Thanks again for all the help. I'm going to say I'm exceptionally greatful and I acknowledge I'm being a total pest.

Playing live in vlc using m3u url works really well on my phone. It happily plays in the background which is great for radio. Is there an m3u playlist for recordings?

Thanks Martin, I couldn't find any documentation in m3u feeds. Could the authentication details be included in the url? Obviously once the call is fixed.

Yes but I am not going to explain how.

It would be better to for sub to fix the API, add unauthenticated access and continue to make sure you don't run NexPVR on the internet but practically speaking this should be very low on sub's list of priorities. There are too many limitations, no resume, you can't play in-progress can't delete on completion. Not many people use radio and very few need background.Live TV anyway.

I am kind of done with this thread now too. It went from a niche request to something just you will likely ever use. Buying a DAB portable radio makes more sense to me.

Martin.

Fair enough, but at this stage it's no longer about radio. Background playback for video is not such a niche feature. It's available on most players YouTube, vlc etc.

I did pay for the Android player and was happy to support the project but et's face it, it's not ready for prime time.

Also thanks for all the help, background playback is working well in VLC using the live m3u feed.

Finally, I've made a small donation to say thank you for all the help so far.

Sub is the author and the well deserved contributions donations and app purchases for him. Background video on YouTube is a premium feature and you pay monthly subscriptions. The NextPVR app is one time purchase and you don't have to pay for the server so no comparison. VLC and MX Player etc are also just players, they don't provide content don't have a server or much of a front end so background playback is natural. Glad you got it working.

Sure some people might use playback occasionally but I know I won't add background or PIP playback to uidroid, my Android client for NextPVR as I consider it a waste of time when I can waste time on more useful things. I consider my Android client ready for prime time, I use it hours every day. The server is rock solid.
