A recent article "Best TV Recording Software" gave NextPVR first place!

https://fixthephoto.com/best-tv-recording-software.html

BTW I'll be getting 4K TV and was wondering if there's a 4K replacement for my 8 year old HDPVR2 with IR blaster that only does 1080p?

Thanks.

Good to read, but the review isn't very accurate, the image is an old Kodi skin.

For 4K grabber some are available for use as a Extra but there aren't many IP controlled 4K Live TV STB's. Most broadcast material is delivered HD only anyway. I'd wait. Many save raw video or h264 and for 4K you want HEVC or AV1

I'll keep my trusty HDPVR2 and the remote I use with it came with the old PVR150 SD cards from ages ago. Not much new HW and SW these days.

<rant>
Is it just me or are there less tinkerers these days setting up HTPC's with NextPVR and putting custom firmware on their routers and phones. The young people seem to only be interested in watching minute long mindless videos.

It's easy for a 4K TV to playback 4K content but assuming 99% of viewed content is 1080, I think it's important to get a TV with well regarded upscaling and image processing (like the high-end Sony A9 TV that I have).

Basically "shit just works" nowadays.
I don't have to mess around with scripts to handle the fact that my Hauppauge PVR350 or USB tuner didn't wake up properly when the PC resumed from sleep.
No one wants to root their phones to install custom roms when phones are already good and people want their phones to be totally secure for 2FA and online banking.
I still tinker with my HTPC to manage power profiles, fan speeds and postprocessing.bat. Heck I had the nerdy excitement last week of discovering that my 12 year old 2TB HDD (with 53K hours of runtime) had thrown 5 sector errors so I needed to (quickly) replace it with an equivalent SSD (£99)
All that extra free time means I can watch a video of a man restoring a pair of shoes or a man cleaning a car......

I think there is more than ever now, especially as new users move from linear TV to app based/on demand viewing or alternatively pirate IPTV.

Traditional subscription cable, fiber and satellite STBs are now being actively replaced with newer wifi Android boxes and new remotes (IR will be difficult) I expect to have to do a lot more than tinkering to keep things the same.    Just glad I don't have to also deal with ATSC 3.0 like the Americans do.

Also now that consumer internet can be > 1Gb many of us will have to rethink wired networking to take advantage of this.

Ya there's lots of content online from a number of sources. I got an ad in my snailmail mailbox for some sort of android box. Seemed kind of shady and you never know when they will go out of business then the HW will be an expensive paperweight. Not open HW aimed at tinkerers.

I remember a vibrant plugin community on gbpvr and that dwindled so much sub doesn't think it's worth having plugins at all now.

My recent 4K TV's ethernet port is only fast ethernet, not even gigabit.

My ISP will soon offer 4K TV over internet (probably mostly upscaled 1080). I'll take a look at their PVR offering ("shit just works" as @gEd said). I like the whole home PVR concept that NextPVR provides however.
