have you seen the SageTV interface, its rubbish, it doesnt do anything fancy at all, if you compare it to the blue skin (which also doesnt do anything fancy) they're just as quick as each other. if sage had more complex skins you would notice slow downs, and of course sage is written in java and gbpvr written in C#, so they dont use the same graphic engines.

I installed a third-party UI, which was...insanely amazing to say the least. It was based on some document for the easiest way to design a PVR interface or something. Was...insane. As for the defauly UI being crap? Yeah...it's...really REALLY horrible. Only way to describe it - particularly since it's menus are not customizable at ALL.

The reason GB-PVR's UI is slow on slow machine is because I chose to use GDI+. I started this project to learn C# and .net, and part of this was naturally using the .net graphics libraries (which are a wrapper on GDI+). It turns out that GDI+ is pretty slow, and in hindsight it would have been better to use some faster graphics technology, but I'm not going to back and change it now - we're too far down the track.

Its not a huge problem though, it just means I have to set a higher minimum spec machine. A PIII class CPU of 1Ghz or higher should be fine, but obviously the faster the better. People trying to get by on old 600mhz celeron machines, or slow EPIA 10000's, should just look elsewhere for an application (or live with deathly slow menus). GB-PVR is very fast on my two main machines (Athlon XP1800+ and Athlon 64 3200+). So anyone using similar spec machine should be fine.

You can either press the blue button in the search screen to do a free text search, or use one the other search plugins like XSearch.

GBPVR never stops amazing me. There are new things (well, at least things I didn't know about) around every corner =)

It's ctrl-B keyboard shortcut. Ctrl-g for green, Ctrl-y for yellow. Kind of a nice setup for those of us that didn't get the Hauppauge remotes (I now wish I did but, eh...my old Pinnacle one is really REALLY nice too).

I second the notion of a plugin to let you filter the schedule for favorites and things you want to record - a monitor to be on the lookout. I did a lot of Googling and found hardly anything on a service to send me an email heads up when a movie I want to see is coming on my cable service. Finally, I found what looks sort of like what I want from Titantv.com, but it is not ideal.

I guess this all stems from 'Thanks to sub and GBPVR, I can now easily record favorite movies... BUT now, how do I find them easily...'. Ain't that just the way, technology begets technology....

Maybe it's just me...but if the UI he is talking about is *that* good, I would like to see it/be linked to it...maybe we can port it or something.
