I think I have found out what the issue is! When the artwork is downloaded from links in the XML file, the image will always be classified as "Poster" even if it had "Landscape" dimensions, so artwork will not show in Kodi if the portrait option was not selected.

You can select poster instead of fanart/landscape in pvr.nextpvr settings.
