I recorded the Padres/Dodgers game last night so I could wait ~45 minutes into it to start watching as I have always done with SageTV.   I added a couple extra shows at the end to record as trying to pad the end of it didn't seem to register when I setup the record.   Watching this on a New Apple TV 4k over Ethernet. IOS 18  Newest Next Apple client, just downloaded a couple days ago.

Started watching the game ~17:46pm (43 minutes behind), all was good till I skipped ahead to bypass a commercial, it went to far and I tried to skip back.  The skip back went way too far back.  Not sure how far.  But maybe many minutes, prior to where I had skipped ahead from.  Dealt with that anomaly.  Continued watching, about an hour into the game things took a weird turn.  Couldn't skip forward and it kept going back, almost to the beginning of the recording.  I had to quit out of Next and go a SageTV app on an Android device and watch the rest of the game in progress.  Which worked as it always does.
Now I am wondering if NextPVR does not allow watching recordings that are still in process so we can timeshift to skip the commercials.

I am looking thru the logs.  If timeshifting is allowed, what are the keys I need to look for to help me understand what happened last night?

The Apple apps are only supported by sub so can't help you much there but I can tell you from developing other clients that in-progress recording is the most complicated logic so it is possible that it needs work.

To answer your question yes the NextPVR backend supports playing in-progress recordings. You didn't have to leave NextPVR, in Android, the uidroid client or Kodi will support in-progress playback, I can't say for certain about sub's Android client. You might have been able to use Kodi on Apple too if you have the technical skill to install it, it is not trivial. FWIW I find uidroid on Android with a remote with lots of keys is my favourite and most reliable client

As I know you are evaluating NextPVR, there are around 17 clients the last time I checked. Generally UI clients (including NextPVR.exe) and Kodi offer the most capability but even then there are variations based on platform. This will be true if you use the NextPVR plugins for Emby and Jellyfin too. A surprising number of users just use the web player.

I guess I should return it back to the app store.  I think it cost about $7, kind of expected it to work as it was a paid app.  -Bill  Rolleyes

That's up to you. Even with the potential limitation of the lack of in-progress from NextPVR for $7 you are still getting value. If you are happy with the commercial Silicondust app for your PVR requirements on the Apple TV that is an alternative as are Emby and Jellyfin and NextPVR has a better backend

I think you overestimate what a paid app means. No doubt sub won't be earning money for his time from the app but it is nice to be able to support him.

Heck, I still haven't even got a response from the developer and its been a few days. I will try your client on Kodi.

Sorry to hear about your issues with timeshifting on NextPVR! It sounds frustrating, especially when you're trying to enjoy the game. From my experience, NextPVR does allow timeshifting, but there can be quirks depending on the setup and the client you’re using.
When looking through the logs, check for any error messages related to playback or buffering, as well as timestamps that indicate when the issues occurred. It might also help to verify that your recording settings are configured correctly, especially for overlapping recordings.
If the problem persists, you could consider reaching out to the NextPVR community for more insights. Hopefully, you can get it sorted out soon!
