Tipstir,

In view of your many GBPVR skins. Do you have any views as to the benefit (or otherwise) of increasing the default resolution from 720x480 to (for example) 1280/960 x 720 for 16:9/4:3 HD TV screen resolutions?

Just my 1.5cents worth but for this to be a really good skin means it has to be simple and intuitive. That defines good products (and good programs). For the most part, GBPVR does a great job of this. Some of the extra plugins allow us to do a lot of trick stuff, but they are hard to figure out. Some basic documentation on the WIKI goes a long way. It is great to see that this has been expanding. As a general rule, if you need a help screen to do the basics, it is too complicated. It would be nice to set a basic standard for what buttons and colors do (or mean) Don't take any of this a negative. You all are doing a great job! I can't wait to see the final skin.

Those four buttons...

Pretend they don't exist. In fact, for some users they don't.

Do what it takes to make the plug-ins work without them, i.e., pop-up menus or what ever. This will prossibly lead to redefining how some of the labelled buttons are used.

Then once everthing works correctly we can decide on a use for those four buttons. Something that can be described in a single sentence.

Not everyone is using a Hauppauge remote. In fact, not everyone is using any remote at all!
Everything should be useable by the keyboard and/or mouse alone, then worry about making it remote control friendly.

Whoa! Hold on there! This is a livingroom/TV centric application. It must work with a remote first, then with a keyboard/mouse.

That said, the solution is simple: a remote emulator for the PC. It wouldn't even need to be part of GBPVR, a completely separate, independent application.

But, I don't mean that GBPVR should pretend the PC doesn't exist. As is GBPVR does a good job of supporting both environments--for example, the on-screen display has basic transport control keys: -, +, <<, >>, |<, and >|; that are mainly useful with a mouse.

If the idea of a full remote control display along side GBPVR on your PC troubles you, consider this; a remote is divisable into three distinct sections: numeric, transport, and navigation (though it would be best to have channel+ and channel- in both numeric and transport). Anything a user needs to do, at any given instant, can be accomplished in just one of those sections. Just popup the section you need .

Should have been "But, I don't mean that GBPVR should pretend that keyboards and mice don't exist".

Keyboard and remote are my priority. Everything must work from these two. Remember, most remotes just pretend to be keyboards since they map remote buttons to keystrokes. Mouse support is desireable, but a lower priority.

I do agree however that we should minimize any reliance on the colour keys - as many remotes dont have them. I've tried to avoid using them in all the core GB-PVR screens (yes, I know I use them during video playback). I'd also not want to display a colour key legend as was suggested.

To add to the "colored buttons are evil or not"-discussion; my remote has two keys that are weird. That is skip forward and skip backward. Those two are also fast forward and rewind (when I press the "shift" key on the remote on the same time) *and* are labeled with a color each. But they can only send two different codes. Wouldn't be a problem, since I don't use the fast forward nor the rewind *except* in the EPG, where I find them nice to be able to jump a cpl of hours... Anyone see a solution (I know, I should've posted this in the support forum...)

Related is this problem: sometimes while listening to music from gbpvr, I like to browse the tv-guide to see whether there are shows i like to record. Then I'll press the >| and |< buttons or >> and << every now and then. This not only moves the tv-guide, but also skips the music. This is NOT elegant. Maybe lock the music skipping while the tv-guide is active?

What's the metter with you people? I follow this thread once in a while, after sub became aware that his good programing needs a sweet artistic inspiration to become noticable by everage user. But it can continue for weeks like this with useless talking. You sound more like politicians than programers. Is it possible that GBPVR has a wrong combination od programers? Can anyone come out with something -real-? Or diferent? It seems everything turns around a same idea. Please, advance... I only know many people around me who wait for GBPVR to have more features and to become more prof looking not shareware like. People like to impress their frinds with their TV's. Bill Gates is not stupid, he has all the bells and whistles, if he had the TV functionality also, nobody would be looking for "something else". Think about it.
