What is this item?

Looking for a WMC remote to complete our new NextPVR setup, I purchased this item.

However, I am far from expert in these matters: please forgive my ignorance. Of the five items in the photograph, I know what four of them are and what they do, but... what's the small dongle seen to the left of the remote, above the batteries? It has a 3.5mm connector, apparently intended to plug into the back of the receiver on the right. What is this dongle for?

Could be either:
- an IR blaster, for the case where you needed to use a set top box and channel channels on it etc (like HDMI capture)
- or just an IR sensor, so you don't have have the main unit visible, and you add this extension cable and the small receiver stuck to the side of a table or something

@sub, thanks for the info. I suspected it was some kind of extender, but wanted to confirm. Good to learn, too, that alternatively it might be used as an IR blaster.
