Wake from hibernate fora recording

Hi All

I have read through the docs, and have been unable to find anything on how to configure GBPVR to wake the PC from hibernate to record. All I have seen is that it is supported, but is there anything that needs to be done? Does GBPVR need to be notified that the machine is going to go to sleep? Is there any way to config the machine to not hibernate if a recording is coming up in the next 10 minutes (or some other arbitrary amount of time)?

You dont need to do anything. If your machine supports it, it'll automatically wake for the recording.

It already does this automatically.

BTW, I am very happy with GBPVR thus far, I used to have a MythTV box on Fedora but am very glad I made the move to GBPVR now

Another question regarding this - how far in advance does the machine wake up for a recording? Can I specify this time (I can't find anything in the config app for it).

Also, should the machine hibernate or Standby?

Standby still runs the fans on your pc etc and copies the state of your pc into the RAM, this means it wakes up rather quickly say 2-3 seconds. Hibernate powers down your pc but the contents of what you were doing are copied to the hard drive which means wake up is longer than standby but faster than normal boot up after full shutdown. Some people prefer standby and other hibernate, also some motherboards might co-operate with one or the other modes, so take your pick which one to use. I personally use hibernate mode.

GBPVR starts to wake up the computer at the exact time you set the recording to begin. To handle this, you need to add an extra minute of pre padding to your recordings.

Actually, with my new motherboard (an Abit AN8 SLI) the Standby mode shuts down all fans and the power consumption is only 1W more than in Hibernate (i.e. when the computer is shut down but without breaking the power)! A bit annoying that it uses 24W to begin with though...

Actually there is little difference between hibernate (s4) and suspend to ram (s3) which is what your system does for standby. In both cases anything that is able to wake the system has to be powered by the 5vsb (5v stand by) line. That is what is using the 24 watts. That and the fact that the power supply in idle will waste some power even without anything running. You would probably find that even if you shut down entirely it still would be taking a significant part of that 24 watts.

For people that are having trouble getting suspend to ram to work (s3) check out a program called sleeper. It is a great little diagnostic program for testing suspend issues. Do a google search of sleeper.exe or search the forums, I posted a link to it in another thread but I don't have it handy.

My shuttle woke up from hibernation to record fine a program. I didn't touch the remote, keyboard or mouse once and was expecting it to go back to sleep when it finished. I didn't. Is this normal?

the back-to-sleep part is dependant on your windows power settings rather than anything GBPVR does, so if youve gone to the 'power options' part of control panel and set the timings for going to sleep/hibernation, thats the timings that should kick the pc to sleep after a recording if you do nothing else...
