highlight the current song in music library

since i primarily sort my music into folders rather than using tags for organization, i really like how easy it is to use the default music library plugin. i just wish that some sort of highlight would remain on the currently playing file so that it would be easy to see what is playing. if the list would automatically scroll to keep the current file on the screen at all times, then users could always see what was playing from the music library screen as well as the songs that were previously played. this special "currently playing" highlight could be as simple as a more transparent version of the normal highlight.

and one last thing because i often add additional information to the filenames of songs, it would be nice if i could display the music library list as filenames (minus the .mp3 extension) rather than having gbpvr parse all of those tags.

The Music Library2 plugin does what oyu ar looking for and has a great navigation format. You need to see the playlist while you are listening- the highlight bar moves on the current song. The other option would be to use the Music Panel on the menu screen.

actually, i am looking for a few tweaks to the default music library plugin. i primarily sort my music into folders rather than using tags for organization. unless i am mistaken (which is entirely possible) all of the other music plugins use tag based organization. am i wrong? i might try to work with mymusic again but it seemed a bit awkward last i used it (i am not a big fan of dealing with playlists in the traditional sense - i'd rather just queue up a folder as quickly as possible. thus, i *really* like the simplicity of the default music library. i have everything sorted into my own categories and i can just navigate, randomize it, and play it.

the current version of my music sorts everything by files, but it does try and use the id3 to display the song to the user in a more friendly manner, eg if the file is called
"Metallica - ...And Justic for All - 01 - One.mp3"
thats kind of long and wont really fit on the screen (large fonts and all)
so tries just use the info
"01. One"
since it already says elsewhere which album you're in.

the next version of my music can sort by id3 tags or by files (tags are nicer though, if you music files are tagged correctly).

i actually like mymusic but it required a bit of a learning curve. not that it is hard mind you, but it was not instantly intuitive (i had to reference the wiki to figure out what buttons you are using since skin authors rarely include a cheat sheet). having married a technologically challenged woman (and the fact that my system is frequently operated by drunk friends and family), i usually sacrifice power for ease of use. here is a bit of feedback and first impressions on mymusic (i was born an idiot so feel free to ignore at will)

- it would be more intuitive (for me) if you replaced both the "Playlist/File List" and the "Playlists/File List" toggles with a single 3 way toggle "Current Playlist/File List/Playlists". this button would cycle through the different list displays much like the view button cycles through views.
- the option to change the default buttonpresses/hotkeys that trigger events.
- have a highlight image for the currently playing item
- after 5 minutes of the list area not receiving navigation input, automatically switch the view to the "current playlist" and have the scroll position follow the currently playing item.
- the ability to add a string of text (the currently playing filename) to the skin - truncated with an ellipsis (...) if it is longer than X pixels. maybe this is already possible within GBPVR but so far i've only looked at xml examples (not the skinning documentation).

as an aside, isn't it somehow possible to have the visualization pop up fullscreen like a screensaver during inactivity? i thought i had read that somewhere and i can't figure out how!

That is supposed to be the default behaviour, but I broke it in v0.95.16. It'll be back in the next build.

sweet. can i make the fullscreen vis show the filename of the currently playing song? maybe treating the fullscreen vis as a separate skinnable panel?

this isnt, but there is a music panel which displays the current song playing (album art, the song title, duration and position)

wow! great response guys! seriously, i am impressed. i guess that last thing is the only real issue i have left. since i do not listen to music in album form, knowing just the title tells me nothing of the artist (i have a poor memory and too much music). if it is implausible to add the current playing filename as a skin element, then perhaps this option could be displayed in the current playing info within mymusic3? i am aware of the music panel, but is it possible to add the music panel to the mymusic skin.xml? if so, can i configure it to just display title and artist with nothing else? thanks again for the help guys!
