3) Is my proposed config up to the job? I'm still finalising the components (and am open to suggestions) but for now I'm planning to use:
Antec Aria quiet cube case
Asus KV8-MX motherboard (or similar. Would like to try the AMD Cool'n'Quiet technology and have at least 3 free PCI slots - the antec case will accommodate 4 PCI cards).
AMD Athlon 64 3000
Some form of quiet heatsink/fan (possibly one of Zalman products)
Samsung spinpoint 200Gb HDD
1Gb RAM
NEC ND-3550A DVD/RW (or similar)
2x Twinhan D&A PCI tuners
Windows XP
and last but not least, GBPVR

Any thoughts on the proposed setup?

Thanks for all the help. I'm now convinced that I'll be able to run this non-dedicated PVR. Based on what I've leant from you and from trawling various hardware reviews, I've made the following changes to components I'm buying.

Instead of ASUS mobo, going for MSI RS480M2-IL. Thanks for the advice, tkgafs. mATX boards with more than two PCIs and on board tv-out are few and far between. This looks like the best of the bunch, so I've ordered one.

The processor I've upped from a 3000+ to a 3200+. Would have like to get a dual core but too expensive.

The other thing I've changed in the spec is the tuners. I've gone for two nebula DigiTV cards. A bit pricey but I got a good deal. The reason is that MHEG 5 support for digital interactive services is a fairly high priority in our household. This means that I'll be using the DigiTV software rather than gbpvr to begin with at least.

Thanks for the warning on the case, gEd. I'll make sure I've got decent cooling in there.

4) I'd like to use a RF remote. Firefly looks a possible but I'm having trouble finding a UK distributer. Can anyone offer advice on an RF remote control?

No need for the Firefly as I'll be using the digitv. I only wanted it so that when streaming media to the other PC on my wireless network I could control the PVR. Since both cards come with a remote and IR receiver I'm hoping I can rig it up to use one on the server and the other with the client.
For anyone else who does want a Firefly, the only non US supplier I coud get hold of is in Norway and shipping isn't too expensive to the UK. http://www.vendur.no
