Disk partition advice wanted

I intend to build a GB-PVR PC with a 80GB HD (all I can afford ATM).
What partitioning do folks recommend?

1x80GB or
10GB for Windows + 70GB for recordings,
or something else?

Its only one physical disk, so I'd probably be inclined to go 1x80GB, unless you like to keep things separate for backup purposes.

Though the advantage of a separate partition just for the recordings is that you can set the cluster size to something large (good for drives with all large files) and defragment it without interference of locked files on the system drive.

Partition that sucker 20/60. I have found that my PVR functions MUCH better this way and it keeps the OS portion free from the rampant file fragmentation that can occur on drives where you store recorded shows.

Whatever you end up doing, I'd agree with wtg about using a large cluster size on the partition that is ultimately going to have video on it.

In my experience it doesn't matter what you do. In 6 months you'll have fallen in love with GBPVR, filled the entire drive with recordings and music and be buying the biggest drive on the market anyway

I don't know what is suitable for you but I can tell what I did : 10+70.
Yhis kind of configuration let me save (via drive image) system partition every time it's stable and restore whenever I wont.

I would break it into at least 3 partitions.

1) system partition where all your apps and OS get installed
2) swap partition - yes stolen from linux - make this about 1 gig larger than your page file.
3) the rest - to store recordings.

The swap partition is only used for your paging file and logs. Change the settings in the Advanced properties of My Computer. (IE remove the page file from C and force it into the swap space you created. Force its size so its not dynamically re-sizing. Then change the environmental vars to point TEMP and TMP (for both users and system) to the same partition. This allows you to defrag your page and temp dirs easily and quickly without having to do the rest of the machine).

The suggestion for a large cluster size is a good one. I use an external USB drive for storing recordings/ghost images (which are also large files). After I changed ghost sure seemed quicker. If you can put the pagefile on a separate spindle(drive) that will help also. Fry's/Best Buy/Compusa/etc. have pretty good deals on small ones regularly (60gig).
