projector!

Amusingly, I was in Germany a couple of weeks ago and the guys there asked me if I wanted a "beamer"? I looked puzzled, then he handed me a projector.

They thought it hysterical because they thought they were using an English word instead of the German word for projector which is...projektor.

Some words are quite funny that way. For example, here in Sweden we didn't have a good Swedish word for "walkman". So "they" invented a word for it. And took another English word: "freestyle". Icky.

thats typical for germany: since a couple years it is 'in' to use pseudo-english words for technical things, also called 'denglisch' (deutsch-englisch)

most of the times it is an 'incorrect' or inappropriately used english word (like said 'beamer' *g*).

there are other examples for this:
e.g. a mobile/cell phone in german would be a 'mobiltelefon'. but in germany most people call it 'a handy'. (some germans i know even _believe_ 'handy' is used in uk/usa, too)

in switzerland a cell/mobile phone is called 'natel' (spoken nah-tell). standing for 'Nationales Auto TELefon', meaning 'national car phone'.
this is a fossil from the times when 'mobile phones' weighted >10 kg and were built in cars :-)

a walkman is a walkman here *g*. they did not invent a 'cool' word for mp3-player 'till now...

Just one last question instead of starting a new thread. Does anyone use remote desktop connection, if not, how do you remotely control your second system?

UltraVNC is indeed great. You can even use it on a palm pilot to control a PC.
