Okay, I will install VLC on my machine (server). Now, I don't have to install VLC as a client right...just WMP right?

Right, if you keep those settings (WMV2, MP3, ASF mux) then you can just use WMP to view the stream. Next build there will be an option to just bring up an embedded Windows Media Player to make it easier, but you can still get it to work by running WMP manually.

I'm still not sure why those images arent showing up for ya tho... strange.

OK, trying this out, it seems to be working fine on the server side, except I don't see what you all mean by "VLC plugin for Firefox".

I am running OS X, have latest fireFox, have VLC installed, clicking on a "play" button for the webstreamer gives me a popup box, and an error " addional pluging are required to view material on this page".

I can't see any of the URL that is generated to send the actual file stream, the button has a link of
http://127.0.0.1:8080/gbpvr/stream.aspx#
(I'm coming in thru my sshd), the VLC web site has no mention of a firefox plugin.

I could change the sent stream to send a .wmv but media player for OS X is a streaming pile, so I don't want to even try that route.

What are you setting FireFox to handle? I can set it by hand if I know what the content type is-

when you installed video lan I believe there is a box you might have to check to install the plug in you are talking bout for mozilla

I never thought about OS X .. perhaps there isn't support under OS X for the VLC plugin.... i'll have to look into this.

There's no installer _per se_ for OS X, it's just a dir with executables and readme.

what is the mime-encoding-type (or whatever it's called) that gets sent with the stream? I could then set up firefox to pass that to VNC.

As it is now, I get the usual "pluging not installed " message with a puzzle piece, that you get on multiple platforms- and the "click here to automagically find plugin" fails as that usually does.

I haven't tried WMP or IE as both really bite under X, but it might work. I'd prefer alternatives though.

Ok, I edited the .xml file to set WMV2 as the codec; same thing going on- missing plugin, no good path to stream/ file/ whatever.

OS X isn't *that* different, nor is fireFox; I *can* get a stream started from the regular webadmin but bandwith considerations kill it.

Would it be possible to have a clickable link that would generate a .m3u file, that I could then open with (whatever). that I could just paste into VLC. the porblem currently is handling the HTML for the login etc- there's no way for VLC to do that of course.

Or, when you hit the play button for a given movie, as well as start the stream, also show the real URL that will pull it from the server? That would work for me I think, certainl thru the tunnel, likely thru the LAN side-- if I could just know the full path/URL to the file that should get played, I could paste that URL into whastever I have that will work.

The URL for the stream is simply http://your_ip:your_streaming_port (as defined in the XML, default is 1234).

Or, you can get a m3u file instead of the plugin driven player by checking the "use external player" checkbox at the bottom of the page.. you could then pop that file open with VLC and it'll load up just fine.

as for the mime type of that m3u.. i think i made it video/mpeg4 .. which on second thought i ought to change probably. There really isn't a mime type for the stream, since I don't ever point your browser to the stream directly (thats what the built in admin does). Instead, the plugin just takes care of receiving the stream.

seems they only give you the source for the mozilla plugin for osx..you'd have to compile it yourself...tho i'm sure someone has a compiled version out there somewhere on the net..
